The Ravens are $7.384 million under the NFL salary-cap limit of $143.28 million.

This follows the Ravens' recent three-year, $7 million contract for former New England Patriots cornerback Kyle Arrington, who's slated to play nickel back

The Ravens' team salary-cap figure includes carrying over $5.791 million from the previous year, nine signed draft picks, their undrafted rookie class and all their restricted free agents and exclusive-rights free agents.

2. Former running back Ray Rice ($9.5 million).......14. Former wide receiver-kick returner Jacoby Jones ($2.625 million).

One reason why the Baltimore Ravens won't be able to do much in free agency is because of "dead money," which is the amount of space consumed by players no longer on the roster, whether they retired, were released or traded.

The Ravens rank second in the NFL with $12.5 million in dead money, trailing only the Detroit Lions ($17.3 million). The Ravens' dead money essentially comes from two players, running back Ray Rice ($9.5 million) and receiver-returner Jacoby Jones ($2.625).

Rice counts a whopping $9.5 million against the Ravens' salary cap for this season because he was released after June 1 last year. That meant his remaining three years of pro-rated bonus was split over two seasons, with the biggest hit coming in 2015.

The Ravens' dead money will likely increase before free agency begins March 10. If the Ravens can't reach an extension with defensive tackle Ngata, they would carry $7.5 million in dead money in 2015 by cutting him.

(or trading as is the case, which will come off at the end of this season)

Thanks...so does that mean this is the last year of the Rice/Jones dead money? And since we traded Ngata doesn't his cap hit go away?

That's what I thought, isn't up to Detroit to rework his contract?

And as far as the rice contract goes that's bullshit, the league needs to give us relief, the nfl needs to force bis retirement, he is not getting another chance in this league.

All dead money from those contracts will be gone after this year. As for Ngata, trading is just the same as releasing as far as the cap goes.

Why? The Ravens released him, they could have kept him. He hit his wife once, unlike many other players who have done far far worse to women, multiple times, they are still in the league.

Thanks again! At least we won't have to fight the dead money issue again next year. :gorave:

Caus there is no video evidence of any others left hooking their wife/girlfriend. If there is no video of rice then he would served his 2 gamer and it would have been over with.

All the players mentioned will be off the books for 2016. However, we have the Pitta situation hanging over our heads. If he has to retire and assuming he is a June 1st cut then there is $12.8m dead money to be split over 2015 and 2016. That means an additional $200k cap hit this year and $6.4m in dead money for 2016.

Other potential dead money candidates for 2016 season:

Steve Smith - Can't see him going beyond this season and the cap savings would be $3m in 2016 but dead money will be $1.167m

Daryl Smith - Will be 34 and we can save $2.625m in cap savings but dead money will be $1.75m.

That's still a lot of dead money to carry into 2016 especially with Joe's cap hit effectively doubling going into 2016.

There's always going to some dead money but we obviously we are way over a barrell for this year. I'm not worried by the small cap hits of Smith and Smith. Pitta's potential dead money hurts but isn't disabling.
