varaven45
We are going to need bigger, better bats- judging from tonight's flat hitting performance against another mediocre pitcher in Milwaukee. It's amaZing how sometimes our offense can make the most mediocre pitchers look like Sandy Koufax. Golly jeez !
dc.
Again... No OBP worth a damn in the line up. Unless we're knocking them out of the yard, we're not scoring much. Gallardo isn't quite mediocre, but we could have and should have done more. Really it's going to be hard to win any game where your pitching gives up eight runs
varaven45
Indeed. Our pitching is incredibly average and inconsistent too

thundercleetz
Ugh Johan Santana tore his achilles in an extended spring game on a freak play. Apparently his velocity was back up and his stuff was looking good. I didn't have high hopes but it would have been really interesting to see him play. dc.
Anyone see when Cruz tried to steal home? I keep asking this question; though I know it hardly matters. Look closely. Abad (pitching) never stepped off the mound, meaning when he threw the ball home it was a pitch, not a "pick off." That means that Davis had the right to the plate and the pitch. If he had swung the bat, he would have hit Norris (the catcher) and that is ... catcher's interference. Automatic first base and runner advance. Tada! Game over. It's an old little league play - a young pitcher never remembers to step off, leaving the plate open for interference. If he does step off, you're screwed - and a professional will usually remember this. Davis bailed on the pitch to make way for the play, probably not even realizing it was a pitch... (though, he should have). I don't really blame him. I do blame him for not bunting against that shift.

I wonder if the ump would have had the awareness to call catcher's interference? There were two outs, right? Even if Davis dropped a bunt it would have had to be a roller down the third base line. Anything else and the catcher could still probably have time to retrieve and throw him out at first. Not sure if Davis is that confident in his bunting ability. Regardless, if he is going to be seeing this type of shift on a regular basis he should learn. He's fairly athletic. Either way, real odd play. If anything, maybe we shouldn't have sent Markakis home on a couple of plays before knowing our heart of the order was coming at bat. Gausman displayed ace-quality stuff last night on national television. It was a real treat watching one of our starters throw 97-98 MPH well into the seventh inning. I think he touched 99 MPH a couple of times yesterday as well. When Gausman can also locate his mid-80s off speed stuff, it's nearly impossible for hitters to get comfortable. varaven45
We needed Gausman II today vs A's. OMG. Where was the starting pitching today ? At least the pitching only gave up 1 touchdown instead of 2. Man !

These guys have got to start bunting on those shifts to get rid of them... Or else your giving up that much in batting average, unless you want to claim to be above the stats like everyone a decade ago.

Real good bunt!
dc.
And if it wasn't Peavy on the mind- arguably the best fielding pitcher in the game- it wouldn't have even been a play. Just wondering why he didn't bunt the other the times...
