Machado Having Surgery

Yahoo (and MASN via Yahoo) are reporting Manny will have knee surgery this week and is done for the season. They didn't say anything about playoffs (I suppose it's implied - but with more than a month, I've heard crazier things). I would assume he is out, of course but just saying.

Big blow. We need his bat and his defense, obviously. I think they have been holding it together without him for the last few weeks, but can't do it forever. Major bummer.

Something tells me his knees are going to be a career-long issue for Machado. 22 years old and both knees have had surgery already. Doesn't bode well for the future.

Rough. He certainly has a career's worth of injury history before his career has really begun. I think we'll have a hard time without him in the lineup as much as anything else, and I've gotta think he'll have a hard time being the player defensively that he was before these knees.

He's only missed about 40, Crav.

Prior to his return we were about a 500 club in April and May. This last two weeks we've been doing OK but primarily against bad opponents... Don't think we'll be so lucky to continue that against decent teams.

The only positive I can think of is the Yahoo report said the doctor found an abnormality in his injuries knee that had been found in his other surgically repaired knee (sorry if that's confusing, I don't know right from left in this case haha). So hopefully with the abnormality fixed in both knees his knees are structurally sound going forward and he'll be less injury prone. That's my uneducated guess, but it's hard not to think at this point that he's going to have chronically bad knees in his career.

Well it is the other knee this year but the report today said exact same injury as last year. But maybe Cleetz is right and there was a fixable issue in both.

I don't know about short career because if he can produce when healthy he'll be OK - but could well be a Troy Tulowitzki.

"The hope was because it was [a] partial [tear on the right side], that it wasn't as severe. The hope was that it would scar down, and we'd be able to get [Machado] back and see how it we went," head athletic trainer Richie Bancells said. "That, in combination with Dr. ElAttrache had always mentioned there was a risk, just given the way that Manny is structured physically, predisposes him to that kind of injury. There was always that risk.

"Dr. ElAttrache told me that we don't know if that risk is next week, next month, next year, two years, you don't know. It was inevitable. The combination of the risk factor, along with Manny didn't feel like it was coming along like he hoped right now, and he had a conversation with Dr. ElAttrache that he decided to go ahead and have the surgery."

Machado said one of the reasons he has sustained these injuries is that he has abnormal knees. With the surgeries, he wants to take care of the issue for good, so it won't be an issue later in his career.

Sounds like the right knee was just on borrowed time after the left one was fixed. Remember, Manny dealt with knee problems in the minors. Hopefully having the same procedure down on both knees will fix the problem for good.

Also from this article, seems like the O's are disappointed he didn't try and rest more to come back. With all things considered, surgery is definitely the right move. We waited too long last year which caused Manny to miss the first month of the season. Hopefully he'll be ready for Opening Day next year.

Think it's safe to say Manny is staying at third base after two knee surgeries?

Oh, easily a third baseman and not a shortstop. No question on that now.

With Tulo, though, I just meant that he could be a guy who missed 20-40 games a season regularly but puts up incredible numbers when he's active. A career that would make yearly awards and HOF difficult. A career that would frustrate fans, especially when he starts missing the post season. But not necessarily a short career in terms of years.

Yeah I found that out last night. Maybe it will be like Jamal Lewis.
