Robert Stone was at his home in Milwaukee on Friday night when he got a text message from his son, Diamond..“I had dropped him off at his friend's house, and he said, ‘Dad, I'm ready to pick,' " the elder Stone said in a telephone interview with The Baltimore Sun. “I asked, ‘Do you want to talk about it?' He said: ‘No, I'm ready. I know where I want to go. So he tweeted he wanted to go to Maryland.' ” It was a tweet heard ‘round the college basketball world, as the 6-foot-10, 250-pound senior, rated the No. 2 center in the country and the No. 10 player nationally by 247Sports.com, chose the Terps over home-state Wisconsin, as well as Connecticut and Oklahoma State. “When Diamond Stone is clicking, he's scoring around the basket with hook shots, he's tossing out counter moves, he's throwing nice passes from the block, he's stepping out and making mid-range jump shots and 3-point shots,” Daniels said last week. “He has all those tools and he can block shots. One factor in the Terrapins' favor was the Under Armour connection; the shoe company sponsored Stone's AAU team.With Stone in the fold, Maryland will have one of the best inside tandems in the country next season. He will combine with Georgia Tech transfer Robert Carter, who sat out the 2014-15 season. Potential NBA draft pick Jake Layman also returns in the frontcourt.The Terrapins also bring back leading scorer Melo Trimble, a guard who averaged 16.2 points as a freshman. You can't put a team of experienced starters together...guys who have 3 years experience playing together....even 2 years.This could be huge for Turgen as a recruiter and coach. The Under Armour influence l, and it's emergence in the basketball world (MVP candidate Seth Curry is UA's biggest name), doesn't hurt either. The Big Ten is a national conference.
