dc.
So, two big moves this week - Price to Red Sox for huge deal and Zimmerman to Tigers for nearly as huge deal given his talent... reading that it means there's even less chance that we get Chen back (not that there was much). We've never paid over $50m for a pitcher (Ubaldo only one...) and Zimmerman, with numbers close to Chen, just got $115m. Ouch. Meanwhile - just read, O's trade Clevenger to Mariners for Mark Trumbo. I read two things: 1. Wieters means they don't see Steve as having value for us anymore... sad, local guy, good hitter, never got his real chance, Buck never liked his defensive struggles. 2. We're already preparing the Chris Davis gap plan. Trumbo can play OF too, but definitely reading that we're not banking on Davis at all - and really, if he wants more than 4 years (he does, of course), I don't blame them. By 33/34, if not sooner, things will tumble fast...
dc.
Just looked up Trumbo's stats recently... ugh. No defense. No OBP. High K rate. Power waning. What exactly are we after here? Nothing we need. Roch swears Davis is still on the table, though. Forgot to add - we did re-add LJ Hoes after the Astros DFA'd him. They never gave him a great shot, though he never earned it much either. But I'm still happy to have him back. 370 OBP in minors...
papasmurfbell
Roch is nothing more than Goebbels of the O's.
Spen
This move, by itself, I like.
dc.
Roch is nothing more than Goebbels of the O's. I disagree pretty strongly with that. He's certainly no more up their ***es than any other regular beat contributor - or even worse: Hunter, Davis, etc. He isn't afraid to say the truth about what they are pursuing and why - and why it doesn't make sense to him. This move, by itself, I like. I don't mind the "move" in terms of Clevenger. I just don't like the addition of Trumbo. His numbers are fading and we desperately need guys who can get on base and put the ball in play. That's not Trumbo. We might not find 20 HRs sitting on the market, but we could easily find 240-300-400.

thundercleetz
Just looked up Trumbo's stats recently... ugh. No defense. No OBP. High K rate. Power waning. What exactly are we after here? Nothing we need.Prototypical Oriole hitter! He'll fit right in! If Chris Davis leaves we should sign Pedro Alvarez who was recently DFA'd by the Pirates. He's another high K, low OBP, plus power guy who would probably do well in Camden.
thundercleetz
@jcrasnick: Expectation in the industry is that Darren O'Day lands a 4-yr deal at slightly under Andrew Miller money. Maybe $32-34M.
cravnravn
The Trumbo trade sends a bad message to Davis and us fans.
papasmurfbell
Davis was gone when he hit 53 HRs.
dc.
O'Day resigned at 4/31... only 5m less than Miller got last season, which a lot of people are saying shows a bad move... not sure I agree. I like the move overall. Lower K numbers, but every other number from O'Day is comparable and in fact in some ways better for a longer period of time. Still, crazy to see that number for a non-closer. Though, O'Day could definitely close. Anyway, minor splash I guess.
GrubberRaven
Sounds like Davis was offered $150, take it or leave it...now we wait...or DD waits...
papasmurfbell
They will leave it.
GrubberRaven
General consensus among fans and press is it's fair. Would love to see how an agent and client discuss stuff like this.
dc.
150 / 7 years. Personally, I am worried it's too much given the time frame... not sure he'll be the same player at 33 or 34, let alone at 36 or 37. I do think it is fair. And I think there is a good shot he takes it - even if eventually. But at the same time, I am 100% that if he waited he'd get more than 150 from someone out there. I still think it's crazy to imagine that O's have never had a contract more than Jones' - $85m. Not that it's a good or bad thing, but I am always astounded we've never paid more than $100m for a guy. Machado will break that easily if Davis doesn't. Scarier still, we've never paid more than $50m for a pitcher. And that was Ubaldo. Ugh. I'd so easily pay $80m for Chen to come back. papasmurfbell
I figure he gets another $25 or so o the market. He is gone and in the end with the price at the end of his contract that will be a good thing.
thundercleetz
Boras knows what he is doing. Someone will pay Davis if we don't.
varaven45
As much as I'd like to see us retain CD, I'd rather secure a SP - such as Kazmir- and hitter - such as Gordon. We could probably get both for less than the $150 M deal for CD.
Spen
I think it's a fair offer. If he takes it - great. If not, oh well. The Orioles and fans have been good to Davis. Hopefully if the money is close he thinks of that. And what kind of homerun numbers he could put up during that term at Camden. He could end up with 400+ homers here. Maybe elsewhere too, but this park is ideal for him.
cravnravn
Rumor is Boras countered with 8 year 200 MIL..I know for a fact Petey and Co are not matching that.

GrubberRaven
Offer has been pulled...O's moving on...unless CD comes back quick, money will be used elsewhere. This prick shows no loyalty (really no one does in today's sports) to a fan base that forgave his past...f him...
varaven45
its probably just as well. Let some suckers throw $200 M at the strikeout machine and 1 violation from another suspension.Meanwhile, its its time to pursue some pitching (maybe Scott Kazmir) and another bat (e.g. Alex Gordon). Hey, Its a damn business eh ! .

Basically none of the players now have loyalty. They fought for FA for a reason. They look to maximize their value. That is why I said to trade him after the 53 HR season.
