Defense Deserves Recognition

Let's give them a round of applause. They are faster and all the work on trying to get turnovers is paying off.

They saved the day when the offense and special teams tried hard to give this game away.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The Baltimore Ravens might not be a great team yet. But they already know they have a great defense.

Returning to its old dominant form, the defense is the reason Baltimore (3-0) is off to its best start since 2009. In a 19-17 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars on Sunday, the Ravens made three interceptions, shut down the run and stepped up when it mattered the most at the end of the game.

Ravens are the Oakland Raiders, who beat the Ravens on a late touchdown last year. But this defense doesn't resemble the one that gave up that play.

In the first three games this season, the Ravens' defense made the stop that allowed the team to prevail against Buffalo, Cleveland and Jacksonville. This is a defense that has given up just 10 second-half points.

In Sunday's fourth quarter, the Ravens held the Jaguars to 4 yards and sealed the win with Zach Orr's interception in the final minute.......http://www.espn.com/blog/baltimore-ravens/post/_/id/30273/ravens-defense-is-why-team-if-off-to-its-best-start-in-seven-years

The linebackers are growing into one fine group.

They are fast and can cover.

Mosley. Great game.

Orr, Great game,

Correa almost had an interception.

McClellan has been very solid and lays the wood.

Suggs is slowly coming back, is a team leader and motivator and had key sacks today.

soon...we'll see Doom. :gorave:

Great game because they had a pick each? Come on max, you know football better than that!

Late to fill holes, not checking the underneath crossing routes, and no, they still can't cover though they played better in zone better than they have before.

Suggs had two sacks only because of a quarterback who ran into him for one of them, then choked and tried to run away from everyone to the sidelines in the waning seconds.

He was a non factor for all the other plays. This defense played basic again, deep cover one, that will not fly against better quarterbacks.

Once these young guys get some experience, they will get more consistent and they should be very good.

Agree. Judon, Davis, Correa...and how about the young guys on the D line?

But they did have a great game. The offense and special teams did all they could to put the D in bad situations and lose this game.

D came through.

To my untrained eye I thought Zach Orr had a good game. Seemed to be filling well and always around the ball. We'll see if the film and advanced statistics back me up...

He did play well, 6 tackles leading the team and the pick, as did the others, please dont get me wrong. With Mosely, I expect more from him, he keeps making the same mistakes.

Oh hey, for the defensive line, 48 yards rushing is all they gave up! 12 carries for 14 yards for Ivory, Yeldon not much better, 6 for 17 yards.

I thought overall the coverage units did well, save for the one big return. The rerurn teams, punt really since the kickoffs went out of the endzone, yes were putrid, though I think Hester could have returned a few of the ones he called fair catch on... The fumble, inexcusable, that is supposedly why he was brought in....

Defense wins Championships....just saying....

Four of the five undefeated teams rank among the five stingiest defenses in the league so far this season in terms of points allowed, with the fifth team, the Broncos, in eighth. The defending champs are the most recent example of how a team can overcome middling quarterback play to win a Super Bowl, as they did in 2015. When they get above-average play from their passer, as the Broncos did from Siemian on Sunday, great defenses can make even really good teams like the Bengals look like they don't belong.http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/page/barnwellx160926/the-best-teams-far-best-defenses-let-rank-top-defenses-overall-2016-nfl

8. Baltimore Ravens

Baltimore is back. Nobody will argue that they've played threatening competition, given that the Ravens have faced the Bills, Browns and Jaguars in three weeks, but the Ravens have allowed just 44 points total. Their run defense has generally been excellent; they did allow one 85-yard touchdown run to Isaiah Crowell (not good), but the Ravens have held the other 67 rushing attempts they've faced to a total of 173 yards, or less than 2.6 yards per carry (actually great).

The new Ravens are built less around a pair of dominant edge rushers and more around the interior of their defense, where they're strong up the middle. Nose tackle Brandon Williams has to be one of the most underrated players in football, while the breakout season that seemed to be in the cards for Timmy Jernigan in 2015 has begun to unspool this year. Jernigan has three sacks and six hits through three games. C.J. Mosley continues to show off his range as one of the best cover linebackers in the league, while Eric Weddle has solidified things for the Ravens in the backfield since coming over from San Diego.

Weddle is directing traffic, but this is a disciplined, well-coached defense all around. The Ravens don't have a great secondary, but they're often in the right place and have been allowing a league-low 3.46 yards after catch per reception. When the defense gets a hand on running backs, the play stops; Baltimore is allowing 0.99 yards after contact on the ground, the lowest rate in the NFL. They have the second-fewest defensive penalties in the league (four) through three games.

To be fair, their turnover numbers are a little inflated. The Ravens have five picks over three games, but two of them were desperation throws on the final drives of their last two contests. On the other hand, they've also forced three fumbles on defense and failed to recover any of them, which is unlikely to recur.

PFF grades for the Ravens Week 3:

https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-bal-jax-grades/

How did they grade out Suggs as an 80? 3 tackles, 2 of those were sacks. One sack he was being stone walled when Bortles left the pocket right into Suggs. The other, Bortles left the pocket trying to gwt out of bounds in the last minutes of the game.

Other than that, he was oftwn blocked by a tight end, dis not get any preasure nor even a push in the pocket.

His other tackle he fell off a block and shared the tackle with two other players 5 yards doqn field... Odd scoring...

Ken McKusick (aka Filmstudy) at RSR also gave Suggs high marks:

http://russellstreetreport.com/2016/09/26/filmstudy/defensive-notes-jaguars-week-3/

Terrell Suggs (36 snaps) made a high-value, pass-rush contribution in 28 such snaps. Those included:

(Q1, 2:06) He bulled through a double team from RT Parnell and RG Cann to force a back-foot throw by Bortles that was intercepted by Mosley.

(Q4, 11:07) He took down Bortles with a pure pass-rushers sack when he bulled LT Joeckel, shed him, then dragged down Bortles as he tried to evade.

(Q4, 4:16) He threw aside Joeckel to pressure Bortles, whose pass was deflected by Jernigan for Youngs interception.

(Q4, 0:43) ZaDarius Smith flushed Bortles left from the pocket. Suggs chased down Bortles by the left sideline in a controlled manner that did not allow the Jaguar QBs escape move to succeed. That forced the Jags to burn their last timeout.

What I like from Suggs so far is that he has made contributions vs. the run and pass. He wont ever be DPOY again, but hes a savvy football player with plus skills who continually finds ways to confound opponents by denying their expectations.

Break free? Bortles ran into him for one sack and laid an egg for the other. Suggs is done, no speed, no power...

I'm sorry but yes, Bortles was pressured all game long he threw for 197 yards, they had no run game. From my view the D played well. What was it 10 months ago Bortles shredded our d in Baltimore for over 400 yards.
