New York Jets’ wide receiver Santonio Holmes was benched Sunday after arguing with teammates in the huddle during New York’s 19-17 loss to the Miami Dolphins, according to ESPN.com.
Sources told ESPN that Holmes and offensive tackle Wayne Hunter were shouting at one another after Holmes said something that the other players resented. The source said that Holmes “quit” on the Jets.
“There were guys in the huddle not happy with Santonio’s demeanor throughout the game and in the two-minute drill,” Jets running back LaDainian Tomlinson told ESPN.com. “And they said something to him about it.”
The report also states that Holmes has developed a reputation as being someone who did not work hard throughout the week in advance of games. Holmes signed a five-year deal with the team before the season and was named a captain by head coach Rex Ryan.

There is too much wrong with that team. They should give Rex the ax tonight.
“Here’s a reality of this league,” John started, “you never pick up where you left off the season before. We’re never back to a minute left in the AFC championship game ready to take it to the Super Bowl. We’re not there until we earn our way back there again. Every team starts over, and the foundation for us starts right now. We build the whole thing from scratch."
