SUGGS CLAIMS HE WAS AT 35-40 PERCENT, SUGGESTS TAKING A “HOME DISCOUNT”

Posted by Mike Florio on January 24, 2009, 9:21 p.m. EST

To the extent that Ravens linebacker/defensive end Terrell Suggs was engaged in a drama queen routine regarding the condition of his shoulder in the days preceding the AFC title game, the curtain still has not fallen.

On Friday, Suggs told Zig Fracassi and Jim Miller of Sirius NFL Radio that the Ravens star was only “35-40 percent” against the Steelers.

“I would say 35-40 percent healthy but you don’t miss an opportunity to play in the Super Bowl so I lined up anyway and did what I can with the one arm,” Suggs said in response to a question regarding the condition of his shoulder.

Though Suggs said he won’t need surgery, such talk could affect his value on the open market, if the Ravens opt against using the franchise tag on him for a second time.

And maybe they won’t, given a suggestion from Suggs that he and linebackers Bart Scott and Ray Lewis might give the team a “home discount.”

“We really don’t want to play without one another because we’ve been playing together for so long,” Suggs said.

“To line up and see somebody [different] behind me in my case, or lining up seeing somebody different in Bart’s case, line up with somebody next to you and it’s not one of the greatest defensive players of all time, it’s going to be kind of weird. Like I told Bart, he’s been like a big brother since I got there. This was his seventh year [and] my sixth. It’s been me, him and Adalius Thomas from Day One. We’ve already seen one of our other brothers walk. We really don’t want to see too many more of us walk away from the city of Baltimore. Hopefully we all can stay, definitely, on a home discount.”

Whether Scott and Lewis and (most importantly) any of their agents agree is a different story.

Suggs played in 2008 under a one-year franchise tender in the amount of $8.5 million, specifically negotiated to suggest his hybrid role. If the Ravens opts to use it again, they’ll have to offer Suggs a one-year deal worth 120 percent of his 2008 pay, which equates to $10.2 million

RIGHT there, proves to me that they are more about the game then the money!!!

Would the AFCN foes shit their pants if we kept all 3!!

The only scenario I can see is, if the Cards get blown out next week and their weakness is at DE/LBer is them backing the Brinks Truck up at Suggs, and since Suggs will be a FA, theres no trading Bouldin for Suggs.

Unless we franchise Suggs again, which seems very likely, in my opinion.

The Ravens will not let Suggs go. They will franchise him or lock him up for 4-6 years.

Suggs has made public his wish for all 3 LB's to stay together. That's nice, but there is a bigger picture.

3 players will be the Ravens top priority in signing...Ray, Suggs, and Brown. They will eat up the most CAP space that is available. Then you have Leonard, Stover, Bart ect....just a lot of guys to sign not to mention draft picks.

So...logically Bart could be the odd man out if his value on the market is high because the Ravens have other capable LB's under contract at CAP friendly levels.

As far as the Arizona ties as a lure for Suggs...it's the desert...the NFL desert. Lot's of NFL players make that their home but won't play there. Biddwell is a joke for an owner, the team got lucky this year with a weak division and a hot Kurt Warner. That bubble will burst quickly and the players know it.

Ask Dwayne Starks.

I know that, especially in these harsh economic times, it is a business and trying to keep everybody does not seem possible but Im optimistic. In Ozzie we trust! I do want to point out that if i remember correctly Scott took a smaller contract to stay with the ravens than he couldve gotten on the market because he "wanted to stay with the team that gave him his shot as a special teamer." anyone remember this? it was in SI article about his hit on jen in 2006

He almost signed with the Browns, but later said he was just trying to get a "free steak".

I'm not confident that Scott will take less money this time. Teams will overpay, and Scott will walk.

I bet you are right. The successful suitor will probably offer Bart the "free steak" with a "hot sauce".

As far his replacement, I hope Gooden, McClain and Burgess are getting ready !
