I remember Troy having exactly the same knocks and very similar looking numbers although I believe DHB was a little more consistent than Troy. However, its a risk I would love to see us take. He could easily turn into the deep threat we need. How many times did we see Mark Clayton get oh so close to some of those long bombs from Flacco. DHB would have simply run under those and it would have been 6. A season under the route running tutelage of Mason could also be a blessing. Yes, Williamson and Ashlie Lelie are certainly the projected downside of DHB. However, DHB has an upside of an Andre Johnson/Marcus Robinson (prime)-type receiver. I completely agree with you on the ever-so-close deep balls to Clayton which would have been touchdowns to someone like DHB. This is why we need DHB. I think DHB gets a really bad rep for being a raw receiver who cannot run routes and was inconsistent in college. While DHB does let the ball hit his body and will drop some catchable balls, he has progressed during his time at Maryland as a route runner. DHB is a big, physical guy, he is not soft (put up 16 reps on the bench press), with some more technique training, he will become very difficult to jam. DHB's best football is ahead of him. As for the inconsistency, look at the Terp's QBs the past three years. Not only the QBs, but DHB's fellow receivers. Teams would double DHB all day. Actually, Nicks probably solidified his spot in the first round with his 4.5-flat 40-yard dash. People were expecting him to come in around 4.55-4.6 Kenny Britt is another guy who might have moved into the first round as well with a 4.49 40-yard dash. In relation, Jeremy Maclin ran a 4.46 and Percy Harvin ran a 4.41. This is going to be a very competitive group of receivers leading up to the draft, especially factoring in the Crabtree injury. At corner, the best-case scenario that we're looking at right now is Fabian, Frank Walker, and a group of younger corners who may or may not even be able to play in this league. I suppose you can throw Samari into that mix if he's still around come draft time, but I'm assuming that he'll be gone. My best-case-scenario right now is for Vontae Davis to fall to us. Of course, that probably isn't realistic, so I'd like to at least grab the best available corner (the guys from Wake Forest, Vandy, or UConn come to mind.) If I knew for a fact that we - 1) could and 2) would - select one of these guys in the second round, then I'd be fine with going with DHB, Maclin, or Nicks in the first. But I don't know if we're going to have the luxury of having one of these top-flight CB's fall to us in the second. There could certainly be a good receiver for us in the second round (Nicks, Britt, or Robiskie?), however the same might not be said about corner (could Butler or Sean Smith drop?). I think Alphonso Smith would be an excellent fit for us. However, what gets me about DHB is his pure speed. Speed, size, and receiving ability like that do not come along very often. If we have the opportunity to get such a player, I believe you kind of have to pull the trigger. The mismatches he would create on offense would be worth it alone. There is not another receiver (outside of Harvin and Maclin) with that type skillset in this draft, and we desperately need a deep threat. With the weak WR free agent class, if we do not grab DHB, then we will have to wait another year to get a deep threat. This could mean another year of being shutdown by a great defense such as the Steelers. So while we might not be able to nab an elite corner in the second round, I have confidence in Ozzie that he could get guys who are good fits for our system in the second and third rounds (i.e. quick-twitch corners who can turn and run with receivers). I do not consider the second and third rounds later rounds, which is definitely where we would be targeting corners if we took a WR (or anything other than a CB) in the first round. After Cmac the only corners we have drafted in the first three rounds are Baxter and Pittman. Baxter was solid for us, Pittman was a bust. That is hardly a ground to judge Ozzie on, you cannot fault him for 5th and 6th rounders not panning out. The bottom line is that we were so fortunate to have Cmac the past eight years that corner was never a big priority for us to take one in the early rounds. Ozzie has also been pretty solid with free agent CB pickups relative to the amount of money he has invested. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Giving a 4th round pick for a first rounder in Washington, thats just pure brilliance.. Good CB's are not going to be found in Rds 4 on, but theres no reason to go CB first, CB's are onlly as good as the front seven, we maintain pressure up front, we could have 2 Deron Jenkins' back there that would make the pro-bowl. We were 4 minutes from making the SB Trophy OURS, the glaring need was WR, the last play the pick 6, Mason was triple covered..That wont happen again with a legit WR to complement Mason and Clayton..Throw in a DHB with Clayton & Mason..Scary Good Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
colincac Posted February 25, 2009 Share Posted February 25, 2009 I think we will go WR in the first round, grab a Corner in the 2nd, and pickup a decent Nickel CB in FA, this of course if we keep Rolle. If we let Rolle go, we probably go after a starting Corner in FA, have him and Washington start, with the 2nd rounder, Ivy and Walker backing up. I'm fine with that secondary.
