Ravens have 'Borderline' '96/'97 look

Remember '96 and '97?

Vinnie and the offense were rolling up and down the field scoring points.

The defense was getting toasted giving up just as many and more.

Remember those 4th quarter meltdowns...the costly interceptions and then the secondary getting beat bad.

Well...this 2012 Ravens team better study their history because there are awfully close to that senario again.

All it will take is for Flacco to start doing Vinnie impersonations and it looks like Williams and Smith already have the Jenkins look.

Sunday night the defense made the stops that they had to in the 4th quarter and Joe and the offense made the plays for the win.

How close are they to morhing into the '96' and '97 Ravens?

They have a ton of excellent QB's to face this season.

But we took down the best QB we are going to face this year, Im OK with it 96/97 with 8 mins left and the opposition up by 8, we would have been TOAST, caus Vinny would have tried to force a pass and that 8 point deficit would have turned to 15 real quick.

Our D will get it together, Pees has to find a way to get Ellerbee on the field at all times, not just passing situations.

Flacco is more clutch than Vinny was, Deron Jenkins was horribly bad. This team is more battle tested due to our runs to the playoffs, those teams didn't know what winning felt like. These Ravens despite their struggles on defense know what winning feels like, that is very very important. Don't you dare compare this team with those sorry Raven teams, I should cuss you out and beat the hell out of you for even thinking that. I'm sorry Vmax for going off on you like that but I hate that comparison.

The difference. This defense has plenty of playmakers despite it's deficiencies. They'll come through when they're needed.

People like Vmax believe that just because the Orioles are good again then the Ravens will turn bad. They won't allow themselves to believe that Baltimore could actually have to good professional sports teams, according to them only one can be good. Vmax seems to forget that while Ray Lewis is older physically he's much much wiser mentally than he was back then. There was no Ed Reed on those defenses. This defense despite it's struggles is still clutch and will not break like the 96/97 Ravens D's did. Vinny T was pretty much a stat piling loser for most of his career with his career year in 1998 with the Jets being the only exception. Don't even get me started with Bam Morris.

Joe is not Vinnie.

But I am reminded of Ozzie's comments about the 96-97 team to the effect that the 'Defense couldn't stop water'.

They couldn't stop New England's passing at all. There is zero pass rush. Too much is being asked of the secondary. We've GOT to put pressure on the quarterback. It was only when New England tried to take time off the clock in the last quarter that the defense was able to make a stand---sort of.

Not impressed with Dean Pees so far but I was encouraged how he brought the house on D the last time New England was in our red zone. We're going to need more of that.

As of right now, Atlanta and Houston are the cream of the NFL.

Those 96/97 defenses didn't have a winning mentality, they didn't know what consistent winning felt like. These Ravens despite their struggles on defense know when to man up and get it done in the clutch. Reed, RayLew, Webb and others can be clutch in critical moments in games. Guys like Deron Jenkins choked on a regular basis and as you said by quoting Ozzie couldn't stop water. This defense hasn't lost it's leadership or the will to win.

PLEASE!

PLEASE DON'T HIT ME!!!! :bleh:

I stand by my "borderline look".

Here's what I mean by borderline: I did not say they are the same as the '96/'97 Ravens.

It has a good side. Just like the '96 Ravens, the 2012 unit is scoring at will...in fact better than "96 with 32.7 points per game vs 27.7. That's really friggn'n good!

So...the offense has the good look like '96 as far as scoring (and yards). It does not have the bad turnover/choke look.

The 2012 D is giving up the same yards.

It's the points surrendered that bothers me. 22.3ppg vs 27.7 for the '96 unit. That looks Borderline to me....as in "They don't have much farther to go to be like the '96/'97 unit D."

When was the last time you saw a Ravens defense give up that many points on average?

Yea...back in the 90's.

The yards surrendered is huge (401 per game average). They are ranked 27th again this week...28th against the pass.

I'm stating the obvious here: If they don't tighten up the pass defense, if they can't find a way to generate QB pressure, then....well it's going to be a long season. Cassell, Rivers, the Mannings, Romo, Rthsslxsbrrgrrr,...even RG3 will have fun days sitting in the pocket picking the D apart.

The saving grace that I see is Webb, Reed and Pollard. They won't let the pass defense look as horrid as the '96 and '97 teams. They'll prevent teams from racking up the points.

Williams is as bad as Jenkins. I was at the game and saw him clear as day every snap. I don't know what happened to him between last year and this year but the Dude is really bad. Maybe it is the loss ofg Suggs. With no pressure these corners can't get the job done. The two work hand in hand so maybe all the blame shouldn't come Williams way.

I agree....Flacco won't turn Vinny and there is also Ray Rice to provide a very effective difference between now and then.

I don't mean for this thread and stats to be a dower. I just had a "Day-Jaahh-Vooo" feeling at the game Sunday night even though I kept posting "Don't worry. The Ravens are going to win" during the game.

And....Sunday night was the second most fun game I've been at...next to the 2000 win over the Jags at #1.

And...I do belive the D will tighten up and get better....but they better hurry after their "Get Healthy" game against the Brownies Thursday night because...here comes Houston.

Look...don't project your shit on me. You do not know me, what I think or what I believe.

No need to talk about me in the third person...you can ask me direct if I think or believe that.

I have been posting about how I was pissed at the media asking local sports fans to make choices between the Ravens and O's. I thought the media was trying to polarize the fans.

I posted how I remember the days when the O's and Colts were very good and in the playoffs and that it's fantastic for a Baltimore Sports Fan to have this happening again because so many were not around when we really had it huge here.

I posted how much fun it was to be at the Ravens pre season games and listening to the O's on the radio. It brought back memories of when we had 2 great sports franchises here.

Why the fuck would I believe we can't have 2 winning teams at the same time?

I lived in a time when we did.

I should hit you for including Matt freakin Cassell as a QB we should be scared of. Second of all we are 3 freakin games into the season, I'll go with what Ray said and see where the defense is at the end of the season. If this team plays great defense at the right time and win a Superbowl just like the Giants did last year then why should defensive rankings matter. You play to win games and championships not satisfy the fantasy needs of fickle fans.

Max has been posting here for a long time. He's one of the more positive posters on this board. Like all of us sometimes we get down, sometimes we're flying high. We're fans, aren't we entitled to that? Isn't that part of the fun? In any case, Max makes this board a lot of fun. Let's show respect where respect has been earned. We can all disagree without disrespecting.
