Preston (and I) has been clamoring for this all year. WTF took him so long? Even the offensive line players are saying its the best configuration. If you've ever coached or taught (or in my case, both), there's a fine line between doing what's best for the team on a weekly basis and doing what's best in the long-run. You can start a player to win a game, but lose the long-run battle about player respect and expectations. It's hard to know where that line is, but it's easy be too lenient. How many guys get to play when they show up out of shape before everyone is out of shape? And then add in the other complication: McKinney has earned his way out of the dog house, but his replacement has been working hard and, even if not playing perfectly, earning his spot. You can bet there are teammates rooting for that guy to keep his job. It's easy to say Harbs was too tough. I thought he was fast and disruptive as he usually is. And wasn't that Ellerbe that had deep pressure on Luck that forced the intentional grounding? I love his play because he makes the Defense so much better. I just hate that he's always hurt. As for the Oline, WTF took him so long indeed? Harbs always talked about playing our best 5...well I can't believe that Bobby Williams was ever at any point in the season a better option and he started at least 2 games. The majority of teams in the NFL would be too scared to make the changes that the Ravens have made coming down the stretch and into the playoffs. When ownership makes you fire a coach that does not bode well for you. When you have players starting revolts on you that also looks bad to mang. He is closer to being fired than he is to a SB. What about the guy playing in his place... if he's working his ass off and doing an alright job, does he lose out to the other guy who was lazy as hell? I still argue the long-term picture matters. Not that Harbs was right, just that it's hard to know the when the right time is and what the long-term consequences will be. Based on all we know about McKinney - specially based on his history in Minnesota and how we got him the first place - maybe he needed 16 games to understand that this team is willing to move on without him. Again, go coach a competitive team (a little above rec league even), and tell me how easy it is to walk that line. Sure, I want kid X to swim for me because we will do better in the relay... huge deal. But as soon as everyone else knows that you can act like kid X and still get to swim, well, there goes the ballgame. So how long do I hold kid X out? He behaved well for a week... does that earn him the spot? His replacement also did well, in fact, behaved better and improved his performance.
