  4. DRESS REHEARSAL: Near the end of their last open practice before Thursday night’s preseason opener, the Ravens ran a two-minute simulation where the offense had to drive the length of the field. The first-team defense got the better of the starting offense, forcing quarterback Joe Flacco to settle for short completions, which quickly wound down the clock. After Flacco spiked the ball with eight seconds left, kicker Billy Cundiff missed a game-tying attempt from 58 yards. View the full article

  16. SECONDARY SPARKLES: Even without eight-time Pro Bowl free safety Ed Reed and cornerback Jimmy Smith, the secondary blanketed the receivers. During an exercise in which the cornerbacks were asked to cover wide receivers one-on-one with quarterbacks Joe Flacco and Curtis Painter taking snaps from the 12-yard line, Flacco connected on just three touchdowns among at least 10 passes. Painter did not throw a touchdown and was intercepted when a pass went through rookie wide receiver Dorian Graham’s hands and into those of rookie Jordan Maybin. View the full article

  23. The Ravens had 13 players not participating in any part of practice Saturday and another two (tight end Ed Dickson and linebacker Darry Blackstock ) who didn’t finish the workout because of injuries. The potentially season-ending Achilles tear to linebacker Terrell Suggs was the biggest blow obviously, but the loss of practice time for first or second-year players like Bernard Pierce (hamstring), Tandon Doss (hamstring), Jah Reid (calf), Courtney Upshaw (shoulder) and Jimmy Smith (back) shouldn’t be overlooked. Upshaw is the only one on the list that was a near certain starter, though Smith is competing with Cary Williams for a starting role. But the rest of the above-mentioned group figure to, at the very least, be key reserves. Ravens coach John Harbaugh does a great job not publicly fixating or fretting about injuries, but I’d have to imagine the coaching staff is getting anxious with how much practice time these guys are missing. The good news is Upshaw says he is real close to a return and Doss said that he expects to practice today. View the full article
