DarthSizzle Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 The Orioles have traded him to the Reds for outfielder Ryan Freel and two mid-level prospects. Its about time we got rid of this bum, so this should me Matt Wieters should be here soon! ESPN has just confirmed the trade is done. Source Quote
ForceEight Posted December 9, 2008 Posted December 9, 2008 Hallelujah! I thought it was supposed to be a Freel/Ramon one-for-one trade. I can't believe we robbed them of two prospects, too. Quote
dc. Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 Most still say that we'll sign a vet to play catcher before bringing Wieters up in June/July... probably Greg Zaun. But, either way.... AMEN. Quote
DarthSizzle Posted December 10, 2008 Author Posted December 10, 2008 Oh I know Matt wont be on the opening day squad but its nice to see us setting him up for the job. Quote

Why let the Bengals get all the laughs in town. Quote
dc. Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 Personally, I think Wieters should be on the opening day roster and should be our opening starter at catcher. We baby our prospects too much. Yes, there are times when "throwing them into the fire" is the wrong move. But that doesn't mean that everyone has to be coddled. Coddling creates weak players. There is such a thing as holding a player back for too long. Bring Wieters up, let him find a groove with us. I don't think he's the kind of talent or the kind of player that's going to be decimated by failure... if he fails. Quote

I don't think he's the kind of talent or the kind of player that's going to be decimated by failure... if he fails. I do not think that is the problem, I think it has to do with the arbitration timeline. The Rays did something similar with Longoria. I am not sure of the exact details, but I think if you wait a month, it pushes back arbitration a year. With Boras as Wieter's agent, you want that date as far back as possible. Quote
dc. Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I think Wieters signed a major league deal... so the arbitration rules do not apply. He is getting paid already. Quote
thundercleetz Posted December 10, 2008 Posted December 10, 2008 I know Matusz signed a big league deal, I am not sure about Wieters. I have heard a lot of talk over on the OH about Wieter's arbitration timeline. Quote
