  1. P.S. there was also an overarching and blatant reference to the Taiwan bicentennial, and so the US and Taiwanese flags were strung together alternating throughout the blocks and several mentions were made by the presenting politicians about the comparative lack of freedom Taiwan enjoys.
  2. Well, I missed the first half of SB while visiting the District with my wife and daughter for the Chinese Lunar New year celebration, 'year of the rabbit'. Local chinese-american dignataries, the Mayor of DC, some councilmen and other officials present. Nice celebration, a parade, various local youth troupes doing the dragon dances, also some local HS bands (Anacostia, others) lending their drum corps to the proceedings through chinatown down to 6th and H street. Politicians offered the normal declarations, proclamations, etc. . The 'native' chinese speakers talked in Mandarin, then Cantonese, then English to translate. Firecrackers and dragon dancers occurred later, and packed-up people got heated and nervous at the human congestion, causing small-scale near riots as people tried to push past each other, shouting expletives and even endangering youngsters by pushing/stomping around without regard to who was unable to physically deal with the pulsing throng. To complicate matters, hundreds of testosterone-filled men sporting Ovechkin jerseys were spilling out from the nearby Verizon center after the caps 3-0 win over the Penguins, I saw one of them shouting at a guy to 'pick up your f***ing kid' when it was clear the adults were more concerned about getting through the crowd then whether they were trampling little ones who were only waiting to get picked up onto their parent's shoulders to watch the dragons dance in the street to the crackling of fireworks. Upsetting, my wife and I were clutching our daughter watching another young kid on the ground who had got stepped on, was crying and whose father was yelling at her for getting lost while other idiots were yelling at them for not getting out of the way... sorry to ramble, but we were at the Rally to Preserve fear/Restore Sanity in the fall with way many more people, and it was much busier for many more blocks and was nowhere near that hostile. Regarding Peri-peri, we escaped the stupidity of that throng and settled on Nando's Peri-Peri restaurant, specializing in chicken dishes in Mozambique-style hot pepper (Peri-peri is apparently Swahili for what is called the Bird's eye chili pepper), and let me tell you, my body had a hives-rash all over it from the heat within an 8-hour period! crazy, but now I realize (at the age of 40) that I'm actually possibly allergic to some chiles, and the 'birds eye' chile pepper known for the Peri-peri style of Nando's happens to break me. I've had the vindaloos and other hot dishes at Indian, Thai and indonesian places, but I've never had a full-body reaction like after eating this African chile-pepper concoction. I had to go to the patient first and get anti-histamines and steroid-based meds! It's calming down now, but not gone by any means... The food at the restaurant was awesome BTW, great veggie preps and the chicken was fresh and tasty, and that restaurant of one of only a couple in the US I think, the other being in or near Annapolis mall. Great to experience, unless you're too thin-skinned for hot food like me I guess. Has any other person some experience with either the chinese lunar year parade or the peri-peri cuisine? I'm feeling itchy and isolated...

    Super Bowl

Despite the score and the last-minute(s) opportunity the Steelers had, I don't think this was a great SB, the Steelers made too many TOs to make this game that intriguing. Rodgers was great, his rating would've been in the 130's or something with a few non-drops. I think that GB team is going to be good for a good while, perhaps outlasting the current Bears wave. I like the Pack being competitive and especially winning the SB with Rodgers, to wash the last rotting bits of Favre from the mouths of the Green Bay faithful, they deserve better and more. They will have it.

    Super Bowl

I think he just made up for several drops with this key catch to give the Pack a 1st n Goal. But he had several drops... Steelers had some momentum before that.
  5. $8 million with only $2 million deferred; kind of alot...; the lineup looks good. If Vlad has a first half like last season, why not put him 3rd? I think most are assuming Vlad is #4, but who knows. I'm worried about Scott having most LF duty when Pie is better but probably will have very limited role there. Does Reimold get sent down I guess?
  6. At this point he hasn't gotten a sniff elsewhere that I know of but I think other teams may be sandbaggin' thinking Ravens won't blink; unfortunately I think they might. They may feel they need to reach a bit for Gaither rather than trust that what they had to work with this year is still workable. For some reason I get the feeling Gaither is comfortable right now, like he has some leverage..., just a hunch.
  7. What options do the Ravens have to keep Gaither? How serious are they? It seems like they want him, assuming he's healthy. What do they need to do to keep him, and if they do, will the line go 'back' to their pre-2010-season vision? http://www.nfl.com/news/story/09000d5d81e06fa3/article/ravens-set-meeting-with-gaither-in-hopes-of-retaining-lineman edit: Hensley's blog http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/blog/2011/02/resigning_gaither_would_be_a_surprise.html
  8. Apparently now it's only involuntary manslaughter, but he was denied bail and will probably be in prison in DR for a year while the investigation continues. yeah, he's fucked. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=6079427
  9. Maybe, if the dude ran through the station in a Hummer with a mounted 60-caliber SAW, that would've done the terminator some justice
  10. Thank god for vests and good aim; it looked like several officers had a good couple shots at the perp before he jumped over the desk, so he was probably running on sheer adrenaline before he took the fatal shots and fell back. crazy and shocking. Detroit has been crazy for a long while in the homicide & general crime stats.
  11. That season his K/BB ratio was almost 2.8 (95/34), not bad
  12. wow, I don't think that would even make 'truly tastless', it's that bad. but yeah I can see the humor in any spontaneous joke.
  13. sorry dude, I thought by "about to sit down" you were actually in the store. The last time I was there the Suntrust was across the street. I know there's an Indonesian restaurant in the lower floor of that building; hot noodles.
  14. Nice; I cannot remember a year when the O's have been this active in the market, and at so many positions. I hope this is a positive sign.
  15. Well, that win vs. clemson looms large, Terps get 3 of the first 4 in that list with the win tonight vs. GT. I'm assuming a very focused Duke team will come in and beat MD, then that would leave them at 14-8 (4-4 ACC) with a couple winable games before back-to-back road games at BC & VT. If they could finish the next 5-game stretch at 6-6 in the ACC by stealing a road win vs. BC/VT they would be in pretty good shape for the last 5 games before the ACC tourney. I'm happy to have Gary prove me wrong.
  16. How the heck did you see that from B&N? CVP is on the south side of West Pennsylvanie, with the Sun Trust bank in the office building across the street I would figure blocking anyone's view from the northeast vantage point. You must've had a York road window view, upper level, south end? That's the only way I could imagine seeing anything other than smoke. Crav, the Hopkins' area CVP is the original and best; the Towson CVP is a second location. dc, good thing I didn't transfer from WVU to UMD during grad school, I was seriously considering that at one point; my party life would have definitely suffered.
  17. I never went to the Towson CVP much, but still sad. I was more a BHOB guy while at Towson. Really though, Towson area couldn't hold more bars than the college park area, could it?
  18. I don't like to hear about a team getting harshed on for something they couldn't control (weather, traffic); it's petty. Of course TU sucks, but that's no reason for some formal reprimand. Let's see what happens if a team like VCU or ODU has to come a bit further north in bad weather and delays a game. BTW what exactly is a "handout from the MD tax payers"? what are the actual details of the financing plans for the arena? I'd be interested to know what they are. They are a public university, part of the UMD system.
  19. Scott Erickson was the dude who influenced Ponson, they were party buddies to a point. Ponson was just bad period. But really that kind of 'beyond the pale' idiocy (like with sosa, raffy, & miggy w/steroids, whatever) is not an issue with this current team. If the worst we get is a slightly unmotivated and possibly disgruntled DH/1B who still has some decent power numbers and can act professionally in the meantime, we win metaphorically, maybe even really. And both Vlad and Lee have experience with good teams, so they can impart sound advice to youngsters just by going about their business; there's no pressure on them except their own wish to perform for some later contract, which should be enough motivation for them at their ages. I say having both players would be great, no problem platooning Scott & Pie.
  20. Ditto, minus whatever was in him when he did those Old Spice commercials I also agree w/Yager. We need to look deeper into later rounds for RBs, DBs. Hopefully we'll get lucky with linemen early.
  21. This blew me away; as if Towson would ever really compete in the Colonial, let alone against George Mason...; bitches... http://sports.espn.go.com/ncb/news/story?id=6066086
  22. If/when he finds out no one else wants him, he can take this offer, eat it with humble pie and wash it down with a cool glass of STFU, then step up for the best 400-500 ABs a guy his age can give us in a hitter's park. Or he can leave the game. That's all that matters concerning him IMO. I don't have a problem with our team having a designated designated hitter.
  23. I'll be rootin' for big Raji to pound Ben into his own endzone! go big Fattie! Maybe the AFCCG wasn't as compelling as I thought it would be, and certainly the NFCCG sucked w/o Cutler's punk-ass in it, but I fully expect a great SBXLV. As a rule I skip all entertainment aspects and most commercials, they really get on my nerves. Nothing 'gainst the Peas, they're cool in my book; I just hate the non-football proceedings.
  24. Yikes, 9th grade! Worst year ever!! Man, I remember that explosion, that was crazy. I think they were showing the news coverage in school...; tragic. I was actually working 10 years ago during the rally, but I remembered it was raining and still a whole mess of people inlcuding kids cutting school went to the parade.
  25. I don't know if I like the idea of him for a year (or a few months), but he wouldn't be a horrible DH. http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/vlad-guerreros-best-bet-could-be-baltimore-orioles-012711
