  2. Interest in Winston may not bode well for McKinnie, could Mathis visit spur Grubbs' decisionWe’re about 40 hours into the NFL free agent period and the Ravens have lost two starters on defense ( Jarret Johnson and Cory Redding ), learned that two of their other free agents are visiting other cities ( Ben Grubbs and Haruki Nakamura ) and have failed to make any roster additions. 3. With left guard Ben Grubbs visiting the New Orleans Saints and a reportedly long list of suitors waiting to talk to him if he leaves New Orleans without a deal, the Ravens will host guard Evan Mathis on Wednesday, according to multiple reports. Mathis started 15 games at guard for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011. View the full article
  4. Outside linebacker signs four-year deal with ChargersThere was much speculation that once he hit free agency, long-time Ravens linebacker Jarret Johnson would leave Baltimore to go play for his former defensive coordinator, Chuck Pagano, now the head coach of the Indianapolis Colts. 5. We’re not going to alert you about every former Ravens player -- I’m talking before 2011, not their current free agents -- but I figured Ravens fans would be interested to know that Jared Gaither, who was with the Ravens in 2010 but last played for them in 2009, is staying with the San Diego Chargers. 8. Carl Nicks is now the highest paid guard in the league, and Grubbs will want a contract near same levelRavens left guard Ben Grubbs, an unrestricted free agent, is in New Orleans today to meet with Saints officials -- and he just got good news. Carl Nicks, who had manned the left guard position for the Saints, has signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We’ll see if the Saints let Grubbs leave town. View the full article

  12. Team may have to wait until April's draft to find another target for Joe FlaccoAt the NFL Scouting Combine late last month, Ravens coach John Harbaugh acknowledged something that was probably pretty obvious to anybody even remotely familiar with the team’s salary cap situation. 13. As the Ravens wait to see if Pro Bowl guard Ben Grubbs -- who will visit the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday -- accepts their offer and returns to Baltimore, they continue to have discussions with the agent for veteran center Matt Birk, who started every game for the Ravens the past three seasons. 14. We’re two hours into free agency and the national news continues to come fast and furious. Now we have a bit of Ravens news being reported by a pair of national outlets. 16. Today’s start of the NFL’s free agency period will bring hype, hope and anticipation to many football cities across the country. But in Baltimore, fans will start to hold their breath at 4 p.m. as they wait to see if Ben Grubbs finds a better deal elsewhere than the one the Ravens have offered him to remain here, and they will be crossing their fingers that their pricy, purple Jarret Johnson jersey won’t become obsolete by day’s end. 20. The Ravens aren’t expected to take a cannonball dive into the talent pool when free agency begins Tuesday at 4 p.m. So here are my condolences in advance if you purchased a custom-made, purple Vincent Jackson or Mario Williams jersey in anticipation of the Ravens signing one of those stars this offseason. 21. This is probably pretty obvious, but it’s important enough to mention that the next 32 hours will be huge in the Ravens’ quest to retain Pro Bowl left guard Ben Grubbs . The Ravens have made what both sides have acknowledged was a substantial offer to Grubbs to convince him to eschew free agency and remain in Baltimore. All indications are that there isn’t much leeway to expand on the offer. Free agents aren’t allowed to negotiate with other teams until 4 p.m. tomorrow, but you can bet that Grubbs’ representative, Pat Dye , has already gotten a good idea about what teams are interested in his client and what they’re willing to pay. If Grubbs goes to free agency, that is a good indication that there will be another offer out there that surpasses the Ravens’ bid. And I wouldn’t be totally surprised if the Ravens then pull their offer and move on from Grubbs. That’s just my speculation based on them knowing they won’t win a bidding war with where they are with their salary cap situation. View the full article

  25. In the last installment of our position-by-position free agency primers, we will look at the safeties. The Ravens will likely have holes to fill at safety, but they aren’t going to be in the market for a high-priced free agent, not with Ed Reed returning in 2012 and not after strong safety Bernard Pollard fit in so well in his first season in Baltimore.
