ForceEight Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 BALTIMORE -- The Orioles added the services of one southpaw pitcher and lost another Wednesday. Baltimore announced signing left-hander John Parrish to a Minor League contract with an invite to Spring Training, filling the spot that swung open when predecessor Brian Burres was claimed off waivers by the Blue Jays. Parrish, who was drafted by the Orioles in 1996, has pitched for parts of eight seasons in Baltimore. He last pitched for the Orioles in 2007, when he notched a 2-2 record with a 5.40 ERA before being traded to Seattle. Parrish surfaced in Toronto last year, splitting 13 appearances between the bullpen and rotation and racking up a 4.04 ERA. Parrish has spent the vast majority of his big league career as a reliever, making just 16 starts in 174 appearances. Still, the 31-year-old will get an opportunity to compete for a rotation berth on Baltimore's Opening Day roster. The Orioles are also considering auditioning Danys Baez, who has been a reliever for most of his career. http://baltimore.orioles.mlb.com/news/arti...sp&c_id=bal I always thought Parrish was a decent reliever, but I don't want to see him in the rotation... Not too happy with Burres getting swept away, either. Quote
dc. Posted February 5, 2009 Posted February 5, 2009 Could care less about Burres. He wasn't going to be anything. And we have plenty of depth, especially now with Parrish, in that "long reliever/spot starter" position. In fact, Burres has gotten worse in his time with the O's... ERA up... Hits allowed up... Strikeouts down... And in fact, over the course of last season, he just got worse month by month by month. Nice enough guy, did his time here. But 3 seasons, no progression and 28 years old. Sorry, but three years (2 1/2 even), is enough time. We've waited too long on our Cabrera's and Ponson's and all them... best of luck. Let the next group on in. Quote
83eh01 Posted February 6, 2009 Posted February 6, 2009 It's nice to have him back. He'll need to outpitch Walker in ST though. Quote
