2010 sixth-round pick trying to erase two seasons on injured reserve and prove himself at left tackleAs he watched the 2011 campaign unfold while sitting on injured reserve for the second time in as many years, Ramon Harewood said he was driven by one thought: proving the Ravens that they made the right decision when they used a sixth-round pick on him in the 2010 draft.

Offensive coordinator says second-year quarterback needs more game experience to continue evolutionTyrod Taylor’s evolution as a quarterback continues to progress as the sixth-round pick in last year’s NFL draft takes his reps behind Ravens starter Joe Flacco.

There was little fanfare when the Ravens signed veteran safety Sean Considine in March, a day that coincided with the addition of Pro Bowl special teams ace Corey Graham and retaining linebackers Jameel McClain and Brendon Ayanbadejo.

The Ravens’ secondary struggled in the preseason opener against the Atlanta Falcons, allowing quarterback Matt Ryan to throw for 155 yards and Julio Jones to catch six balls for 109 yards and a touchdown in one quarter. However, defensive coordinator Dean Pees said the defense’s problems against the Falcons were not confined to the secondary.

The Ravens offense is hitting the accelerator. Baltimore started its first preseason game in Atlanta in the hurry-up offense. Even though it wasn’t successful – as the team had three straight three-and-outs – Baltimore is sticking with the process.

Justin Tucker, a rookie kicker from Texas, has pressed incumbent Billy Cundiff by splitting upright after upright during Ravens training camp, whether it was a chip shot field goal at the team’s facility in Owings Mills or a 63-yarder in front of 20,324 screaming fans at M&T Bank Stadium.

Rookie inside linebacker understands uphill climb facing him in his quest to make Ravens' active 53-man rosterNigel Carr isn’t shy about tackling challenges. That attitude helped him land at Alabama State after getting kicked out of Florida State after a burglary arrest. It’s aided him as he seeks to make the Ravens’ active 53-man roster.

USING THEIR HANDS The secondary was particularly active in getting a hand on passes. Cornerbacks Jimmy Smith and Chykie Brown deflected two passes each, and outside linebacker Sergio Kindle tipped a Tyrod Taylor pass intended for rookie wide receiver Dorian Graham in the end zone. At one point, offensive coordinator Cam Cameron yelled at the offensive players on the sideline, “They’re reaching for the ball, and we’re not! Reach for the ball!”

As the Ravens near the end of training camp, Tuesday began at the team’s headquarters in Owings Mills without Ed Reed and Torrey Smith.

The first priority for the Ravens defense has, and likely always will be, stopping the run. Whether Baltimore can continue that trend will likely depend on how well it can re-build its front seven after losing three key run-stuffing veterans.

A former college defensive back at Miami (Ohio), Ravens coach John Harbaugh did his best to give the offense a decent look during Monday's practice when he lined up at cornerback.

Losses of Terrell Suggs, Jarret Johnson and Cory Redding won't change unit's success vs. the run, according to Haloti Ngata and Clarence BrooksThe Ravens have been ranked in the top 10 against the run in 12 of the last 13 years and in the top five for six consecutive seasons. But with the unit losing a pair of outside linebackers in Terrell Suggs (torn right Achilles tendon) and Jarret Johnson (free agent who departed for the San Diego Chargers) who were often overlooked for their ability to force opposing running backs to the middle of the defense, can the defense continue that strong tradition?

Stocky and stout at the point of attack, Ravens reserve offensive lineman Justin Boren has proven difficult for defensive linemen to push around.

Three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle intends to play within defensive scheme rather than freelance to make up for absences of Terrell Suggs, Jarret Johnson and Cory ReddingThe Ravens lost two defensive starters in outside linebacker Jarret Johnson and defensive end Cory Redding and will be without outside linebacker Terrell Suggs, a five-time Pro Bowler and the reigning NFL Defensive Player of the Year, for a good portion of the upcoming season.

DEFENSIVE DOMINANCE: The defense clearly got the better of the offense Monday and that was best exhibited by a four-play stretch during 11-on-11 drills. On the first play, safety Sean Considine picked off a Joe Flacco pass that ricocheted off of Anquan Boldin. Cornerback Lardarius Webb sacked Flacco on the second play before tight end Matt Balasavage and Ray Rice had drops on third and fourth down.

After spending last season on practice squad, defensive tackle is intent on making team's active roster this summerAs an undrafted rookie last season, Bryan Hall was happy to make the Ravens’ practice squad. But the second-year defensive tackle has made it known that a repeat trip to the practice squad is not one of his objectives.
