If it were me I'd hire an agent. I don't care if he gets a piece of my money, I'd still like to be protected.

These deals are complicated. He should hire an agent or at least a lawyer. He will negotiate badly and be mad about his deal later. In the NBA you can do the deal on your own because the slotting is so locked in not in the NFL.
