Ravens' Steve Smith, Elvis Dumervil among players who triggered extra pay

Veteran wide receiver Steve Smith helped the Ravens qualify for the playoffs during a resurgent season in whicn he led the team with 79 receptions for 1,065 yards and six touchdowns.

Because of his playing time, individual and team performance, Smith earned an extra $1 million by hitting incentive thresholds in his contract. His total compensation from the Ravens for 2014 was $5.5 million, including a $1 million base salary and a $3.5 million signing bonus. His three-year contract is now worth a total of $11.5 million, including a $3 million base salary for 2015 and a salary-cap figure of $4.166 million.

Smith wasn't alone among Ravens who triggered incentives or escalator clauses this year.

Veteran middle linebacker Daryl Smith earned a $1 million incentive clause based on his playing time and team performance. Smith also triggered a $500,000 escalator clause that boosted his base salary from $2.5 million to $3 million for 2015. His salary-cap figure is now $3.875 million. In 2016 and 2017, Smith's base salary is $3.5 million each year with salary-cap figures of $4.375 million. The total value of his four-year contract is $16.1 million.

Tight end Owen Daniels, who caught 48 passes for 527 yards and four touchdowns, earned $755,000 in incentives through receptions and playing time. His total compensation for his one-year contract was $1.755 million, including a $5,600 workout bonus.

Backup center Gino Gradkowski, a 2012 fourth-round draft pick who played sparingly behind starter Jeremy Zuttah after starting every game during the 2013 season, hit an escalator clause heading into the final year of his rookie contract. Gradkowski is now due a $1.574 million salary, expensive for a backup. His salary-cap figure is now $1.695 million, up from $660,000.

Strong safety Darian Stewart earned a $300,000 playing time incentive clause, making a total of $1.6 million on his one-year contract.

Meanwhile, Pro Bowl outside linebacker Elvis Dumervil created a $4 million financial windfall for himself.

Once he got to 12 sacks -- which he achieved by sacking New Orleans Saints quarterback Drew Brees twice in a November road win -- Dumervil triggered a $1 million one-time incentive clause. Dumervil's contract has a base value of $26 million that includes a $7.5 million signing bonus and $11 guaranteed. He also hit an escalator clause that raises his base salary by $1 million annually in 2015, 2016 and 2017.

His contract is now worth $30 million over five years with a maximum value of $33 million if he hits the 12-sack figure again in 2015.

Dumervil can also earn another $1 million bonus if he records 12 sacks in 2015 or 2016, and the defense improves as a team in points allowed, touchdowns allowed, total defense ranking, average net yards given per run play or pass play, sacks, interceptions or team wins or if Dumervil improves in interceptions, interception return yards, touchdowns on interception returns, fumble recoveries, fumble return yards or touchdowns on a fumble return. It can also be earned with 13 or more sacks.

Dumervil's 2015 and 2016 base salaries have gone up from $4 million to $5 million with salary-cap figures of $7.375 million those years. His 2017 base salary has gone from $5 million to $6 million with a salary-cap figure of $8.375 million.
