TBird Posted February 7, 2016 Author Posted February 7, 2016 There's not guarantee about any player. Phil Savage said atthe Barn I see a lot of Ogden, Lewis and Heap jerseys in herebut when we drafted them we had no idea they would become thestars that they did. We hoped they would but had no idea andhe included Ray and JO in that group. Players are dropping like flies today so there's no guarantee onanyone. Ravens missed last 2 SB because of injuries - last yearwhen it took the best QB and coach in the game to beat a bangedup secondary after blowing a 2 TD lead - twice - in Foxboro and inFebruary and this year SI and Peter King said Ravens would winSB 50 barring injuries. You saw what happened. Back to Staley - He would be the best player on the board ifTreadwell is gone to Dallas so Ozzie will draft him but only if KOleaves. He wants to stay and Ozzie is gonna try to sign him. Then again who would you want KO or Von Miller if Oz could sign him. Say Miller wants to get back with Dooom and signs, there'syour play maker and the best so we could let KO walk and draftRonnie Staley at LT. Of course just about everyone will betrying to sign Von Miller. Then go for the secondary help. Just saying - ya know? Quote
thundercleetz Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 True, if Treadwell and Ramsey are gone that is a bad scenario for us. Staley might be the guy. However, I would rather target Noah Spence and find a way to draft him. Beast of a pass rusher. He's projected as a late first/early second rounder as of now. However, he's going to sky rocket at the combine. Quote
cravnravn Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Defence wins championships, we all agree there, then Ramsey should be on the radar and make a seriuos run at von miller. If it means letting Suggs go then so be it. Quote
TBird Posted February 9, 2016 Author Posted February 9, 2016 Not having to worry about LT for ten years hasn't helped the Browns much. We need playmakers who can get points on the board! Ravens haven't had a legit difference maker on offense in 20 years. If you have a chance to get Ramsey.LOL - Nothing has helped the Browns for the last 10 years - nothing. Joe Thomas is one player and the only one on offense. Kruger the Beastis the only one on defense-lol. That was a joke. We could have forgotten the left side if we had Joe Staley. He wouldhave made a difference here but we had great teams going to the SBand all those playoffs. He would a made a big difference and we wouldhave never had Hurst filling in for the injured. Phil Savage was the GM who drafted Thomas wanting to take the protectionfor his QB first especially since he wouldn't last long and then he took hisQB who bombed and got Phil fired. Joe Staley has been a constant in SF. Ozzie would say that was one of hisworst moments in football. He wanted Staley bad and Mike Nolan knew it.He used to coach here under Billick and got the SF job. He knew Ravensneeded a LT as JO was gonna retire so he traded in front and grabbed Staleywho has been a force and made the pro bowl. I never seen Ozzie as pissed. That presser was like a morgue. He got Grubbswho turned out to be the best LG in the game but left as a FA but SF had togive up a 1st round pick the following year to get Staley which means theydidn't have a #1 pick. That helped get Nolan fired because he didn't have the bodies he needed. It was like trading for a home run hitter like Frank Robinson but not havinga Jim Palmer to get the other side out. Anyway, Ravens always beat SF with Staley in both the regular seasonand the SB by only a few points. We wouldn't have had all this worry on the left side with Staly. Quote
thundercleetz Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 And then we drafted Michael Oher and thought we'd have nothing to worry about but he gave us plenty of worries. No matter what the position is, there is a risk. Quote
TBird Posted February 9, 2016 Author Posted February 9, 2016 No we didn't. Not all of us. I told DeCosta at a Nest 1 meetingthat he fucked up the Oher draft and it got me kicked out of the club. That was after we lost to the Squeelers in POs and Joe neededweapons. All winter everyone talked about the wide receiver we'dget. Instead, they drafted Oher who wasn't any good to begin with.Ozzie never read the book on him.He knew about it but didn't readhow stupid he was. The word is mentioned in the beginning of thebook and all through it. The other GMs read the book. Oher wasone of the ones who couldn't learn Castillo's zone blocking schemebut the entire line couldn't except Yanda and most of them wereshipped out. The Sun called the pick and said it would be him but I wanted Nicks.DeCosta told me that Nicks wasn't as good a player as Oher. All hedid was win 2 SB rings in NY and was the go to guy going down the stretch when they covered the other WR. Nicks won the game withsome acrobatic catches while Oher was just dumb. Even Gruden said on TV, Oher has been here long enough to knowwhat to do but he looks like he's in a daze out there. He had no ideaon whom to block and didn't. He was beaten on the right side and thenon the left side and then back on the right side. He almost blew the miracle play in Denver. He was beaten badly andjust as his man was ready to sack Joe, ala Cam Sunday night, Joestepped up in the pocket and fired a strike to JJ who was behindeveryone. It almost didn't happen because of Oher. Oher gave upa sack in the SB. He got a ring and we won in spite of him. But I'm talking about the top 5 OTs in the game. When they're draftedyou can put them in and forget about the left side. Ravens did it withJO and Baltimore Colts did it with Jim Parker. Berry tells the storyhow Colts had probs with the left side getting to Unitas so theydrafted Parker and they never heard from the left side again justlike us with JO. Barring injuries, Ronnie Staley should be good enough to play LThere for a long time. He's no Gaither or Fat Mac. or Monroe. Tunsilis the other LT you can insert and forget about but he won'tbe there. If he is, Ozzie would draft him over Ramsey or Treadwell. Quote
thundercleetz Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Ok say we take risk out of the equation and both Treadwell and Stanley are graded on their best case scenario. Who would you take at #6: Dez Bryant or Joe Staley? Quote
TBird Posted February 9, 2016 Author Posted February 9, 2016 Ozzie could have had DEZ and didn't want him then. Dallas traded up for him but Ozzie's pal Bellicheat called and said Jerry is on the phone. He wants DEZ, do you want to better their offer? Oz said no thanks and Ravens fans were pissed as hell especially when they learnedOz could have traded up but didn't want to. Anyway, to get back to your question, I'd take Staley because we wouldn't have had all the probs we had at LT over the years likeGaither, Fat Mac, and now Monroe and Hurst filling in for him. SF went tot he SB with Staley at LT while Dallas has not with DEZ.Besides, there were so many red flags on D EZ who has caused a lot of trouble for Dallas like beating up his own mother with herbra and getting arrested. The only thing that kept him out of prison was that his mother dropped charges vs him but he can'tgo near her house according to a court order. He's just now settling down and become the type of player you'd expect of a #1 pick. Ozzie won the SB w/o DEZ and after drafting Pitta who won it with a big catch and TD. Quote
thundercleetz Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I meant from a pure talent perspective. No off the field drama. I would much rather have an elite WR than an elite LT given our current team. Quote
TBird Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 Well, again I'd take the LT if he were like JO and we could just forget about theleft side for the next decade. If Tunsil is there at the 6th spot he'll jump on him if KOleaves. He'd be the best player on the board and is better than any WR on theboard including Treadwell. I've seen him going as high as #1 pick of the entire drafton some mocks. Ozzie won the SB w/o a WR or a QB but he had the best LT in the game protectingthe blind side for whomever was in there. That said, he would have won a couple of more if he had a DEZ. After we lost to Indy, and I was there, last time we got them in POs, Polian, their GM said Ravens wouldhave won the SB that year if they just had a blue chip WR. They only had Masonwhom Indy shut down in 2d half. He alone kept it close for the first half. Ozzie did draft TT who was a first rounder and good receiver in college but he didn't nothing in the pros. He took another first rounder in Mark Clayton who was a college All American. I beggedhim to take Roddy White drafted in the 3rd round and he hurt us when we played Atlantaand that brings up Atlanta. They never even been to the SB with all those great WRs like Roddy and Julio. In fact, theytraded the farm for Julio and that got Mike Smith fired. He was on the way to play us in SB 47with a 2 TD lead vs SF but blew it for lack of defense. He gave up a lot of defense to get that special WR. Look at Cinci with AJ Green who has hurt us a lot but they always get bounced out of the playoffs in round 1 except once, I think. The best WRs like White, Brandon Marshall, HIney Ward and Boldin were drafted in themiddle rounds. Oz did score with Torrey Smith in the 2d round who got him a ring. Torrey didn't score a TDin SB 47 but demanded coverage from their best CBs because of his speed and JJ gottheir best cover guys on the other side that weren't much. But Torrey and JJ took SF to the outside corners and that left the middle wide open. Pitta scored his TD in the middle of the end zone and that was the difference of the game.Even Dickson made a crucial catch over the middle and Pitta got a ring before Gronk. So Ozzie did draft one good WR while signing in great slot guys like Mason, Boldin and JR towin playoff games for him. And speaking of the middle rounds, Ozzie took Patrick Johnsonin the 2d round as WR leaving Hiney Ward on the board drafted in the 3rd round by Piss. He took, OMG, DEM WILLs and left Brandon Marshall on the board and somebody badwith Boldin on the board. The WR position has just been Ozzie's achilles heal but wontwo SBs drafting whom he did. Quote
TBird Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 I forgot to mention in that long winded post that the games are won in the trenches. Iknow that from being in there at my lowly level and it's the first place I look at in agame when everyone is looking at the ball. I saw Denver's line dominate Carolina early on and they wore them down completelyby the time Superman fumbled near the end and was too tired or scared to fall onthe ball. Panthers line was pushed back all night. Look at Von Miller and the plays he made alone. Panther's coach sure would have loved an Ogden at LT than a DEZ Sunday night. Games are won in the trenches. When Unitas was asked how he performed like that in suddendeath of the 58 championship game he said its simple. I couldn't do anything at QBw/o those big guys in front of me. CAM should know that by now although his head stillmight be spinning. Quote
cravnravn Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Carolinas loss is pinned on the coaches, all week the talking heads said to slow down the Denver rush Cam has to run the ball 11-15 times. He ran the ball 6 times, Sunday. Sadly he got good yards on his carries, don't know how the coaches missed that. Quote
TBird Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 That's always a good reason for losing but watch the tape. Their line wasn't blowing off theball like Denver's to run the ball that much or for pass blocking as you saw. Von Millerwas a 1-man wrecking ball pushing the line back. It was like a high school line going vs a pop warner line. Panthers just didn't want it andthat goes back to the coaches. Quote
thundercleetz Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Absolutely games are won in the trenches. However, the marginal benefit of an elite receiver over an above average receiver is much greater on a team's success than an elite tackle over an above average tackle. We won a SB with McKinney at LT because Oher was a bust at RT. That year we had the best WR corps we've ever had in Baltimore and Flacco played the best football of his career down the stretch. I haven't done my homework on Stanley yet. I don't know if he's a better player than Treadwell. I know Treadwell is a stud and is going to be a #1 receiver. Stanley is going to have to be significantly better than that to justify the kick that high. Stanley is listed at "only" 6'5" 315 pounds, which means he could be smaller than that. I'm interested to see what his hands and arm length are as well. Tackles that go top ten are usually bigger or taller guys than that. Quote
TBird Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 Well said. We have to wait til the combines are over to get the numbers on everyone. Those will bethe official times. Someone said Treadwell is not fast but has size at 6' as a possession guy who gets YAC. I have a bad feeling Jones will draft him. This is where the draft is not deep. If Hargreaves,Ramsey and Treadwell are gone and KO stays then who? The draft wasn't deep last year. Kiper had Perriman ranked at 15th best player and Ozzie hadhim at 17th BPA which is where he got him. Oz said later there was no one left in the first roundhe liked. Dupree was the guy he wanted bad but Piss drafted him just above us and Ozziegroaned. WEll, he certainly wasn't an impact player this year but neither was Shazier last yearwho had a much better year this year. BTW - Torrey Smith was the best WR Ozzie drafted and he got a ring. Didn't score a TD in the SBbought took his coverage deep in the corner along with JJ taking his deep on the other side andBoldin semi deep. That left the middle wide open all night for Pitta to win the game. Even Dickson made a crucial3d down catch to keep the drive alive. He made it over the middle thanks to Torrey's speed. Quote
TBird Posted February 10, 2016 Author Posted February 10, 2016 Here's a mock from nfl.com and on a CBS power ranking Treadwell is listed 6th who is listedat 6'2, 210 lbs, so with Perriman, we'd have 2 tall receivers the way Trestman likes them. In this mock Treadwells taken 7th by SF. In this mock Ravens get - BOSA. I said he's been dropping already. JAGs take Treadwell. Ronnie Stanley, LT is ranked 3rd and Tunsil is ranked as the best player in the draft.I've seen several mocks calling him to be the first player drafted. According this, Tunsilis drafted 1st and Stanley is 3rd player to go. Then 2 QBs go so that's dropping Bosa. NFL.com says Dallas needs a QB but Jerry says that can wait another year and draft aWR. That would be Treadwell. http://www.nfl.com/draft/2016/mock-drafts We wouldn't be off to draft Stanley if KO leaves provided he's there. Here's the CBS power rankings of each player with Treadwell and Stanleyranked 6th and 7th. Hargrieves is ranked # 14. WoW. McShay said he's the most pure cover guy in the draft but he's 5'9 and might get bounced around in pros. http://www.cbssports.com/nfl/draft/prospectrankings/2016/all Quote
