C.T. Wilson, D-Charles, officially introduced House Joint Resolution 5 on Wednesday.Joint resolutions are filed to express the will, opinion, or public policy of the General Assembly. The resolution comes days after National Football League Commissioner Roger Goodell said that the NFL is “listening” to and is “being respectful” to those who have expressed opposition to the Redskins’ nickname, according to the Washington Post. Some groups have called the name disrespectful to Native Americans, perpetuating demeaning stereotypes. They say the name should be changed. But Redskins owner Daniel Snyder and other team officials have said they do not plan to change the name.Joint resolutions are subject to the same legislative process as bills in the Maryland General Assembly, and must be passed by both houses. But unlike normal bills, Gov. Martin O'Malley does not veto joint resolutions and may or may not sign them. The resolution next heads to the House Rules and Executive Nominations Committee for a hearing. Quote
