How do compensatory picks work?

The Ravens are expected to get 4 additional comp picks to go with their already 4 remaing picks, for a total of 8. How exactly does this work? In what rounds do we get them or do we have to wait to the draft ends?

You get them at the end of each round. So with a 4th round comp pick, you'd be picking around the 33rd pick in the 4th round.

they look at the free agents you lost and the ones you brought in. Other things come into play like contract size and playing time.

a guy who is 90% right on compensatory picks before they are handed down thinks the ravens will get 2 4ths and 2 fifths.

The 2nd 5th round pick he was predicting was for Reed. We are not sure how that is going to work out because Reed was cut during the season. His contract was borderline 5th/6th as it stood so more likely 1 of those 5ths becomes a 6th or 7th round pick.
