Doesn't the favorite team have to win by one point either way?

But as a betting tool if the spread is -1 and they win by 1 you the gambler lose what is known as the "vig" or the "juice" If you bet 1000.00 you lose 100..Whereas if the spread is - .5 and you win by 1 you win the amt bet.

 

The dreaded "hook" 1/2 point can be your best friend and the next week its your worst enemy.
