The 26-year-old Cuban defector doesn't have much left to learn in the minors after progressing through five levels during his two years in the Orioles' organization. Alvarez is considered a strong defensive right fielder with a plus arm. He's a line-drive hitter who led all Orioles minor leaguers with 37 doubles in 2014. His power, though, is a question mark; he was limited to one home run during 44 games at Triple-A Norfolk after bashing 14 during 91 games at Double-A Bowie. The Birds could use a right-handed hitting outfielder to form a possible platoon, so Alvarez might have a chance to crack the Orioles' 2015 Opening Day roster.1B CHRISTIAN WALKER: Baseball America ranked Walker, 23, as the top-rated position player prospect in the Orioles' system, and it's not hard to see why. He won the Birds' 2014 minor league player of the year award after compiling 26 home runs and 96 RBIs during a season split between Bowie and Norfolk, capped by a six-game call-up to the Orioles in September. Walker's defense isn't anything special, but if he can sustain his power breakout of 2014, he could force his way onto the Orioles' major league roster soon -- especially with first baseman Chris Davis slated to become a free agent after 2015. Alvarez will certainly be given a chance to win the starting job. He has hit at every level and could present a defensive upgrade for us in terms of range and arm strength (both of which had been on the decline for Nick). I like Walker, he has a high baseball IQ, but he is very stiff on defense. He sort of reminds me of Brandon Snyder, a first round pick we had.
