Can't help thinking about the season Peyton won his first Super Bowl. The Colts run defense was ranked near the bottom of the league. Teams were getting them on the ground. Yet Manning would bail them out. Then the playoffs started and the Colts run defense that was soft as tissue paper, turned it around, shutting down some of the best run offenses, the Ravens included, and went on to win it all. I'm not saying the Ravens pass defense will turn things around, nor that even if they do, the Ravens will win it all. Just pointing out that it is possible. May today be the start..

Ever. They play a soft schedule, go 7-0 every year it seems then play a top 8 team and lose. 1-13 under Franklin, and over rated recruiter and Coach. No real speed so that when they do face real athletes, they are always two steps too slow. Stick with Franklin, you will win 9, 10 games but never a championship. Oh, but there is a 12 team playoff you say? Even if the committee was blind enough to put them in the playoff, they will be 1 & done... No real qb since Trace, even he had limitations. Oh sure, they can score, look "real" against the poorer teams of the Big Ten, who can't against North Western, Iowa, types...

Agent 0 and Hamilton have said the right things this week. How embarrassed and angry they and the rest of the defense is by what has been said of them, how they have played. So, either they come out and dominate this Sunday, or they fall apart completely. With the Ravens front office looking at possible defensive help via trade for an edge rusher, possibly, though not likely a secondary help, what teams do this weekend will help decide for them, which players will be available before the trade deadline on Tuesday.

Nope, missed today's practice as well..mmmmmmm
-
Lamar out of practice today, at least the media portion. All others, including the new receiver, were practicing. No sense working with the new guy now, huh? Speculation is a groin issue According to espn

The interesting part Grub is that guys who were outstanding, now all of a sudden can't play any more? I could understand if it was simply blown coverage after blown coverage, but these guys are completely out of position, some playing catch and run, the later is a coaching issue. Granted, they lead the league or are close, in dropped picks, catch a few of them and the defense is much better stat wise, at least one game, the Browns, is a win. But Roquan knows how to cover in zone, now he can't? I will say, these qbs and receivers are making incredible plays, the Ravens lead the league in tight coverage, it is just getting best by perfect passes and catches on many occasions

It is quite weird aint it, kinda like being back in 1996 all over again.... Fitting that it is Halloween

Remains to be seen. I would love to know what is going on with Walker, size, speed, yet he can't even be active on game day? Is he that bad at routes? No hands? So you bring in a wide out who is moody, shuts down when the ball doesn't get thrown to him. Sure, he is just "depth", for now. Know what pass he specializes in? The back shoulder throw, outside the numbers. Know what pass Lamar can't throw? Back shoulder, outside the numbers. Saw an article written on Espn, the reporter clearly doesn't know the Ravens. He claimed that Johnson would help this offense by making catches outside the numbers, where the Ravens are near the bottom on catches. He made it seem as if the receivers are dropping passes outside the numbers, when it fact it is Lamar who can't make those throws. Sure, Johnson is good against man, when he is the first read, but.. The Ravens run comeback, crossing, plants, occasionally a go route. They clear out the middle for some seam routes against man. I really don't see this as being anything more than depth in case of injury to Flowers or Bateman. So Walker must be really bad, sadly. Hope I'm wrong and at least it doesn't cost anything save a roster spot

Okay, let's get the bad taste of the loss to the Browns out of our minds, time to Broncos. If this Ravens team has showed us anything it is that they tend to play to their opponent. If said opponent is supposed to be bad, the Ravens will play flat. Good, they will play great. With that in mind, who are the Denver Broncos? Their defense is for real, 3rd in the league in total defense, allowing just 282 yards per game, 176 via the pass, 106.4 on the ground., just 15 points per game. Getting after the qb is where they shine, 2nd in the league with 30 sacks. Offensively, though, they are 25th in the league with rookie Bo Nix at the helm, 307 yards per game, 185 through the air, 121.4 on the ground. Nix is completing 63% of his passes and is 2nd on the team in rushing with 259 yards and 4 tds. J Williams leads them in rushing with 345 yards & 2 tds. Nix has been sacked 11 times and has 8 tds, with 5 picks. As a team, they are even in the turnover battle, coughing the ball up 12 times (5 picks, 7 fumbles) and getting their opponents to do the same, only with 7 picks and 5 forced fumbles. Their opponents are in question as to truly how good Denver is, but one thing is for sure, the Ravens have to take them seriously. Rush lanes have to be maintained as to not let Nix hurt them with his legs. Pass rush has to get home, he will cough the ball up when frassled. Offensively this line will be tested once again, Denver has a very good pass rush, which has helped to cover up a lack of overall talent in their secondary. There is no mistaking this, this is a must win game for many reasons. 1 major one, to keep this playing together. A loss might have this team fall apart.. Who ya got?
-
Per Espn, Ravens trade with Panfhers for the speedy wide out. They swap picks, a 5th for a 6th. Even so cheap, how much better is he than the rookie or even Wallace? Not sure about this move.

Tucker makes the 50 yarder, he has a 40 yarder to hit to win the game. Yes, a lot of ifs and buts in the Cleveland game, a loss no matter what now. Dead leg? As the announcer suspected, a long time successful kicker in the league. Maybe he has to stop trying to kick 70 yarders in warm ups and practice. It used to be a fun way for him and the team to pass some time. What ever the reason, like the defense, just as with the special teams tackling, fielding on side kicks, until they fix them, this team is 1 and done in the playoffs without a consistent Tucker, a viable defense, better coverage on special teams. This is a true team game, 3 fazes.

Baker would be nice, but Zona won again and that div is a mess. I doubt they trade him now. There is nothing the team can do coach wise, for the defense without changing the system. That will have to wait until the season is over. Ojaba was a healthy scratch so I wonder if they will try to help the secondary by getting a pass rusher
-
Actually Stone, as good as he was, often broke coverage, something that while it worked, mostly because of the pass rush, ticked off the coaches. Humph talked a lot about that on his pod cast over the summer. While he is currently hurt in Cinci, was not having the same type of season any way

Investing move benching Williams and not Jackson, especially after both Harbs and Orr praised him earlier this week. For him, it mattered not, he still got paid and the defense was actually worse in every sense. This defense is at a cross roads,, to coin a phrase I used for the team once upon a time, then they went on a run, so it goes. The players know the problems, they know who can and cannot play. I'm not sure that there is a safety out there worth trading for, Cisco from Jax, maybe, but then, if the communication is the main issue, will bringing someone else in, player wise, make a difference?
-
I thought the line did all right, Cleveland has some very good edge rushers and Swartz is a very good dc.
-
Well, I think every receiver had some drops. 2 for Bateman, 2 for Flowers, 1 for sure for Algholar, maybe 2, don't remember. Then again, Lamar missed Flowers wide open for 6, over throw on a semi deep pass, had time to throw too. He also over threw a wide open Likely, in the middle of the field, 15 yards away on a 0 blitz but he had plenty of time. If he hits him, it is a touchdown as well. For once Cleveland played cover two, Flowers was wide open between the safety and corner, Lamar was late with the throw and it was underthrown, leaving Flowers with nothing but to catch it falling down. If on time, maybe Flowers makes the only man to beat, the safety, miss amd scores. Point, all receivers drop passes, qbs miss throws. No, trading a 2nd for Kupp or some other receiver is not the answer. Nor are Bateman, Flowers, Algholar, Jackson the issue. This offense is fine, it will have hiccups
-
Im not sure who the Ravens can bring in, but they have to do something. There is more wromg than just the communication issue between the players. There is clearly a communication issue betwen the players and the coaches. You don't forget how to cover, let us start there. Yes, a lot of the plays are comimg on incredible throws and catches. I think the commentators even mentioned that the Ravens lead the league defensively on tight windows. Even so, they must lead the league in wide open receivers too. Some of the issues fall on the defensive line, the pass rush. There is very little of it without blitzing, even then, it often fails. This leads to having to cover, longer. I will say that I have noticed guys, corners, when they have coverage over the top, and a receiver is on am in breaking route, they stay in trail position rather than undercutting a route. By undercutting, you make the throw harder and, get a real good chance of an interception, not that they would catch it....mm Now the lack of pass rush, very few stunts, some of that is because of the qbs that they have faced: running ones where you want to keep lane integrity. The few times they did use stunts today, aginst the Browns, resulted sacks, pressures that resulted in incomplete passes. Why not more? Winston was not going to run.... Orr has said he relies on Pees so they brought Pees in, guess what? Under Pees, we saw many of the same issues we see today under Orr, who leans on Pees. So clearly, Pees is not helping. Harbs pointed to the 6 straight defensive stops against the Bucs as to proof the defense is not as bad as it appears. That they dropped a pick or two and that would have lead to less yards for the Bucs. Well, today, they dropped 3 and all 3 lead to scores, the last one to a game winning score. No coach, those 6 straight were an abirition, helped by 1 player catching a pick thrown right to him on one drive, a lucky one on another. This defense has missed more tackles than any Ravens defense has in the past, even more than the horrible 96/97 Ravens defense, go watch the tape coach to see how bad this defense is playing. It isnt the loss of Queen, Stone. Nor is it the loss Mike Mac, but of the other coaches who also left. It is who ever decided that Jackson was a viable safety, who coach? He can't cover, can't tackle, can't catch. Just who decided to sign him? Who brought in the positional coaches that have players playing incorrectly? Have them reaching for tackles that they miss because they are out of position? On a day when the offense could not do much right, against an offense with a qb who has not played in over a year and is mistake prone. With a make shift line. This defense should have gorged, instead they dis not chew their food, they choked. This is clesrly too much for Orr and, clearly his positional coaches as well.
