papasmurfbell Posted March 25, 2014 Posted March 25, 2014 http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2014/03/25/vontaze-burficts-performance-based-pay-tops-615000-in-two-years/ No player has benefitted more from the NFL’s performance-based pay system than Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict, who has nearly doubled his pay over the last two years. The performance-based pay system rewards players who make low salaries but get a lot of playing time, and Burfict personifies that more than anyone else in the NFL: An undrafted rookie in 2013 who makes the league minimum, Burfict has been a starter for the Bengals for both of his years in the league.Last year, Burfict led all NFL players in performance-based pay, making $299,465 (his salary was $390,000). This year, Burfict’s performance-based pay was even better: Burfict gets an additional bonus of $315,848.The bad news for Burfict is he hasn’t seen any of that $615,313 yet. A controversial aspect of the performance-based pay is that players have to wait more than two years to collect their performance-based pay. So Burfict will get the $299,465 bonus for the 2012 season in 2015, and he’ll get the $315,848 for the 2013 season in 2016.By the time Burfict sees that money, he will likely have signed his second NFL contract, one that pays him like the solid starter that he is, not like the undrafted free agent that he was. This is why I thought the Ravens should get him. Cincy is stealing against the cap for him. Quote
cravnravn Posted March 26, 2014 Posted March 26, 2014 I remember that draft, thought for sure he'd be a raven, off field issues killed.him.. So now that's burfict, green, and little reds that will command huge contracts. Mike Brown ain't nudging Quote
papasmurfbell Posted March 26, 2014 Author Posted March 26, 2014 But that is what I said at the time. If he is an issue cut him. If he is great you are stealing. Vontez is still 2 yrs from being a FA. Quote
