SpearSrai Posted January 16, 2009 Share Posted January 16, 2009 ESPN is reporting that Ravens CB Samari Rolle is likely out for Sunday's AFC Championship against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Terrell Suggs is said to be a 'game-time decision.' This would leave our starting 3 corners as, if I'm not mistaken: Fabian Washington, Frank Walker, and Corey Ivy. I had to chest our roster to see who our dime-back would be... Evan Oglesby? Maybe we'll pull a guy up from the practice squad, if that's an option, but this isn't looking good right now, with the Steelers possessing 3 good receiving options (Ward, Holmes, Washington) The only way I see us surviving this one is if we get a ton of pressure on Roethlisberger. I think he's a more important loss than Suggs, but I think we'll be able to handle it. If Washington is on his game (as he has been, lately), I have confidence in the unit. If Washington does his job, the QB has to force passes in one direction or another, etc. I think Washington keeping pace with his excellent play lately (excluding last week) is the key for the secondary. I'm starting to think the Ravens aren't blowing smoke on the Suggs' injury, either, so he most likely won't see any action. Oh well. Nobody's going to feel sorry for us. This is the AFC championship game, it's time for everyone to step up and take it to Pittsburgh. I'll buy a Frank Walker jersey if I have too! It's going to be a hell of a challenge for the Ravens to overcome this, but if we do, it will go down as one of the greatest, (if not the greatest) wins in Ravens' history! Forcing passes to Hines Ward and Santonio Holmes isn't a great situation for us. Ward has proven time and time again that he can work a corner whenever he wants to. You have Frank Walker covering Hines Ward, but somehow this is a good thing because Roethlisberger will have to "force" the ball to him? I guarantee you this is what they want...we won't have to force it by taking away the other threat. Just go all out. Send the house at Rthslsxxbrrgrrr....nail him....hit him while throwing...force the bad throw...the INT. That's what the Stealers will try to do to Joe. I actually wouldn't mind that ... as opposed to bringing Oglesby or Stone or whoever to cover... In fact, given that Rolle always needs help over the top anyway... using Walker/Ivy and adding Zbikowski or Nakamura as the help doesn't feel that bad. ... It's still all going to come down to pressure on Ben. I am still kind of smirking at all the analysts saying that Willie Parker changes this game... for the Ravens better I still believe. This will be exposed once again on national stage Sunday night. We passed over this CB deficiency in last year's draft (I am obviously leaving FA's Walker and Washington out of discussion). Regardless of CMac and Rolle's status next year, we have got to get younger at this position. We need a 2009 version of Cmac (in his prime). Dont know how we get em, but Oz has got to figure it out ! ROME Posted January 16, 2009 Share Posted January 16, 2009 I watched the replay of our 1st game against the Steelers and noticed we didn't really blitz Ben as usual. We were only rushing 4 or 5 most of the game, but still got to Ben to disrupt their offense. If Rolle is out I think we'll be doing the same so we can pretty much eliminate any big plays. The old bend but don't break like last week. Ed Reed will be playing "center field" and whenever Holmes or Washington goes long he'll be there to give the CB help. dc. Posted January 16, 2009 Share Posted January 16, 2009 Rushing more than 4 or 5 is actually counterproductive. Some guys with Scounts, Inc did the research, rushing 6 or more is not effective. It's too easy to make the quick pass. 5 is the blitz. More than that, unless done perfectly on the perfect play, is going to get you burned. We've been sending more than 5 for years and been able to get away w/ it b/c we had corners that could play man. Jim Johnson has been doing it up in Philly too and had success. ESPN kept track of Kerry Collins' stats when we sent 4 or less and 5 or more. The Steelers will find a way to have Ivy guarding Holmes in the slot and that will be all she wrote. I'd rather do down with one of your young DB's first. It happens all the time. Watch the colts game if you don't know what Im talking about. With that said. There is just something about this team right now where they'll find a way to win.
