  1. Just spent 15-20 minutes shovelling off my front pourch and steps. It's wet and heavy and hard going so if you are old and feeble, like cravn, shovel for 15 minutes and then stop. Pace yourself. The plows aren't comming anyway.

FYI...at my bottom step I measured 25 inches of snow 8am Catonsville. My street is totally impassable.

  2. GREAT!!!! Lost the Satelite signal, go outside and the dish has caught 18" of snow...

    That's a disaster...call 911!...call the govenor!

I just lost 2 big limbs from my magnolia tree.

I love how all the closings are being scrawled at the bottom of the news reports...like we're too dumb to put 2 + 2 together.

  3. Atleast I can watch horse racing from Florida in a few hours..And dream.

I have that channel now. :)

We have thunder and lightning on top of almost 2 feet of snow here. It's the wet, hard to shovel stuff. No sign of any snow plows yet. It's almost a white out outside with the wind.

  4. Here's what Bisciotti said...with a Dick Cass addition...

In regards to the CBA, what can you say to the people in Baltimore who scrape together dollars to support the team, and who can’t understand how so much money can’t be divided to the contingent of parties involved?

(BISCIOTTI) “You know, as far as the fans go, I know that… This is a horrible part of any business, but when you have fans involved that are committed to it, then yes, I’m sensitive to it. But I’ve got partners out there right now whose teams are making less money than their linebackers. And so, I think we’ve got an acute problem here with the general profitability of the teams. We always knew this was not a big cash flow business, but when you’ve got guys like Jacksonville [Jaguars] tarping up 10,000 seats to stop blackouts, when you’ve got teams that are voluntarily staying at the minimum of what they have to spend on the salary cap in order to not go upside down financially, then we already have a structural problem. So, I don’t expect the fans to take… I don’t know what side that the fans are going to take. You know, three years ago if we hadn’t done the deal, we would have forced the players to strike. And you would argue that then the fans would take their anger out on the players. We did a deal, and we did a bad deal, and we didn’t understand it at the level that we needed to, and the implications that it was going to have. And obviously by the time we did [realize the implications], we were already into the deal. So, that puts us in the unenviable position of this thing ending in a lockout as opposed to a strike. And I certainly bet that most of the anger is going to go towards the owners. But, I’ve seen the St. Louis [Rams] up for sale for a year and a half, and I think they started at $900 million. I think that they’re now looking at somebody to buy them for $600 million, and the reason is because there’s no cash flow. So, if we don’t get this thing back to the point that the teams can all cash flow enough, that they can go into a bank and look at a statement and say, ‘That’s a solidly-run business,’ – not team – then there are long-term problems for the league. And unfortunately, we’re going to have to address that, and it’s going to cause some pain for a lot of us, maybe.”

How is business for the Ravens?

(CASS) “In terms of the Baltimore Ravens, in terms of where we are in business, we’re doing fine. We’ve been able to sell all of our tickets, we’ve been able to sell our suites, [and] sponsorship dollars are basically flat. So, we’re doing well compared to other teams around the league. But again, I’m focusing on revenues, not expenses. Just because we’re still doing well in revenues doesn’t mean we’re generating a lot of profit, because we do spend a lot of money as well.”

  5. Some random notes on the Ravens this week...

The Baltimore Ravens are not raising ticket prices in 2010.

The Ravens had a packed house in Owings Mills this week, as all of their coaches and personnel staffers were on hand for the yearly tradition of dissecting the roster.

From Monday to Wednesday, the group goes through every player to rate their contributions from the 2009 campaign and forecast them for 2010.

“It’s our time to talk about the team and go through the whole season, soup to nuts,” said Ravens director of player personnel Eric DeCosta. ” It’s about the players, talking about the different issues each one had, injury status and evaluating how they played this year and how they’ll play in the future. It’s a chance for us to take all different accounts into consideration – salary cap, durability, performance – and hash it all out.”

Also the 'State of the Ravens' press conference will be this afternoon....you can probably hear it all on MASN.

    Update on Webb and Nakamura...

While at different stages of recovery from their respective ailments, both Nakamura and Webb realize that they still have a long road ahead of them.

“I think I’ll be full participation once training camp rolls around,” stated Nakamura. “That’s as long as I don’t do anything stupid and try to come back too soon. I think I’ll be 100 percent by then, but hopefully I’ll be able to do some things by minicamps, too.”

As for Webb, things aren’t as rosy.

Considering how late in the year he was injured, he would likely open training camp – and perhaps the 2010 season – on the Physically Unable to Perform list. This is after the gifted rookie started four games for an injured Fabian Washington (ACL) and was emerging as a capable corner.

“I can’t look back and get frustrated,” said Webb, who walked without crutches. “I had a great season and got a chance to play. I’m not worried about my future, because I think I showed enough out there to prove that I can play in this league. I just can’t rush it coming back.

  6. COVINGTON, Ky. (AP) — Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Rey Maualuga pleaded guilty to drunken driving Tuesday and received a suspended sentence.

The rookie linebacker was arrested four days ago after police said he hit a parking meter and two parked cars in northern Kentucky. He was charged with drunken and careless driving, and a court hearing was scheduled for Feb. 25.

  7. 220x166-top_rex_finger.jpg

It may or may not get worse. I'll explain.

This morning I read...I'm sure it was from Don Banks (reputable/reliable)...that Nnamdi Asomugha said he and Revis want to play together and they were trying to talk Rex into bringing Asomugha to the Jets. The articles (actually 2 paragraphs) was all quotes from Asomugha stating this.

Talk about a sick back field! ...but the point is... that is tampering if Rex said anything to Asomugha (who's under contract for the next 2 years).

I just got home from work and checked Banks collumn and that story is no longer there. Maybe it has no truth to it so Banks yanked it(but why the Asomugha quotes verifying this?).

Maybe it's a bomb about top go off.

I would think the media would be all over this by now...but they are not.

  8. With the news on Freeney's torn ligament I have to change this to "Saint's Prayer Answered"... :) ... they have a shot because the Colts D works only because they get steady pressure by rushing 4. That pressure probably won't be there...even if Freeney plays.

This is shaping up to be 'whoever has the ball last wins'.

Speaking of shootouts....watching the Pro Bowl last night and games like the Cards/Vikings I have to say the NFL is starting to get like the NBA.

With defense being negated by rules that favor passing, it's getting...boring. No strategy. No "Force clashing with Force". Like the NBA, just tune into the end of the game to see who wins.

  9. by a cell phone camera..

SUNRISE, Fla. (AP) -- New York Jets coach Rex Ryan apologized Sunday for making an obscene gesture at a mixed martial arts event.

Ryan was booed Saturday night while doing a TV interview at the MMA event in the Bank Atlantic Center, the Florida Panthers' home arena. He was smiling when caught making the gesture by a cell phone camera.

"It was stupid and inappropriate," Ryan said. "I wouldn't accept that type of behavior from one of the coaches or players and it's unacceptable from me. I apologize to the Jets organization, the National Football League and NFL fans everywhere."

Jets general manager Mike Tannenbaum added the organization will address the matter internally.

    http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2010/football/nfl/01/31/ryan.gesture.ap/index.html

I think he threw the finger but he could also have raised his shirt as an obscene gesture.

  10. Max, living here in New Orleans I have seen every Saints game this season. Let me just say this, that defense is scrappy in every sense of the word. By saying Manning is going to tear that defense up you are doing them a major injustice. Gregg Williams has his defense play as a unit, not individuals. Sure, the defense will give up yards (twenty-fifth in the league), but they are second in the league in take-aways (39). A defense is going to give up yards and points when you have an offense as prolific as they have, but the bottom line is that the Saints scored 510 points and only let up 341 points.

There is a lot of talent on this defense. Jonathan Vilma is a beast and is the Ray Lewis of their team. Sedrick Ellis is solid up the middle, Will Smith had 13 sacks on the season, and Shanle and Fujita are solid against the run. That secondary is very deep and underrated. We all know what Darren Sharper did this season (9 INTs for 3 TDs), and the starting tandem of Jabari Greer and Tracy Porter was among the best in the league this season. Not only do they have two solid corners, they have two solid backups in first rounder Malcolm Jenkins and former Super Bowl starter for the Pats Randall Gay. They can matchup with the Colts, no doubt. Remember, when the Saints were going through their tough stretch they were without their two starting CBs and had McKenzie and Cmac playing extensively. Both Greer and Porter are full strength now.

Ever hear the phrase "putting lipstick on a pig"... :) football-7.gif

They are the 25th ranked D in the NFL.

Now...I will be pulling for them all the way. I'd love to see them win the Super Bowl...but that 'Ain't gonna happen'.

  11. Hey Troy! The Browns showed their love by passing on you 6 times on draft day!

I really don't want him on the team now that he's shown he's dumb enough to want to go to the Elephant Graveyard.

The moron is under contract, has accomplished nothing in the NFL, can't crack the starting lineup...who the hell does he think he is?

You can bet this pisses the Front Office off. They do not and will not negotiate in the press.

  12. How's that for good English... :)

That's what I see. No shot in hell to win the Super Bowl unless Manning has brain farts and LSD flashbacks all game long.

The Vikings did everything they wanted to do to the Saints except win.

The Saints struggled into the playoffs losing 3 straight...1 to the lowly Bucs in a game the Saints needed to win and played everybody.

The Cardnals...no defense whatsoever...don't let that game fool you.

The Colts D won't evaporate in a mist like the Cardnals but one thing you can count on happening...

Peyton Manning will tear the Saints D up. He will be the Super Bowl MVP. He is hell bent to cement his legacy and make history.

They have no answer. Won't be able to keep up.

    Bad timing for the Saints.

  13. varav...this is how I see it. The amount of good QB's in the league is maybe the best it's been in 20 years. Until now, it's been a QB starved league for a long time which means the quality of back up QB's was even worse. Weak and disappointing. The back up QB's, in general, are guys who had a shot and failed. In general. They have flaws.

We see the Ravens D destroy back up QB's regularly....doesn't matter if they are a vet.

Think about the 'vet back up'...what does he know? If he was all together then he would be a starter somewhere. So what does he have to give as a mentor?

Any back up to Flacco that the Ravens can get will bring with him lesser skills and fatal flaws(given the available talent pool) so it's a 'no win' situation in my mind.

I'd rather go with Troy Smith, who's been in this offense for a while, than any career back up QB....and I don't think Smith can lead this team to the playoffs.

Just get a guy who is smart enough to not make the fatal turnovers, has some guts and character and can hand the ball off....maybe make a big play or 2...find that guy and the Ravens are fine at back up.

  14. Here's a more in depth article on Pees...I like the hire.

New Ravens linebackers Coach Dean Pees had a feeling there may be some interested parties when he chose not to extend his four-year stay as New England’s defensive coordinator.

Well, there were more than he anticipated.

Pees said he heard from “a lot” of teams around the league, and one even offered him a defensive coordinator position. He was rumored to be in the hunt for Denver’s vacant coordinator position. But in the end, Pees chose Baltimore – as a linebackers coach.

“It’s because of the franchise and the people here,” Pees said Thursday evening while settling into his new office in Owings Mills.

“I had a lot of opportunities when I decided not to renew my contract with the Patriots. What I really want to do is have a chance to win and be around people that I really want to work with and for. I think this is one of the best, if not the best organizations in the league.”

    http://www.baltimoreravens.com/News/Articles/2010/01/Pees_Lands_in_Owings_Mills.aspx

Between the lines...it sounds like he had enough of Bellichek. It also confirms what a great job the Ravens are doing toward becomming a well respected and 'Elite" organization.

  15. I have some questions on "mentoring"

Does it actually matter and help?

I think it's one too many voices in the QB's ear. You have the OC's and QB coaches guidance and direction daily. If you have a good QB coach then let him be the single point of accountability. Let him work in tandum with the OC for the desired results of the offense. Plus...Joe is going into his 3rd year with 2 trips to the playoffs...he's no rookie or raw talent.

Does a veteren back up QB matter as a mentor? How much do these guys want to mentor?

I think having a solid vet as a back up is helpfull because not too many QB's make it through a 16 game schedule. You need a very solid and capable #2 who can step in and help a team make the playoffs.

Can Troy Smith do that? I have my doubts....but with the solid O line and running game he might be able to help the team stay on a run until Joe got healthy. I also think he will remain a Raven because they will not get the compensation or value they feel is adequate on the market.

Here's Cam's take on Joe development although it does not mention mentoring...

    http://www.baltimoreravens.com/News/Articles/2010/01/Cam_Convinced_Joe_Will_be_Elite.aspx

  16. a little update here....

    Flacco Declined Pro Bowl Invite?

When news broke that Jaguars quarterback David Garrard would represent the AFC in the Pro Bowl since Peyton Manning will be busy preparing for the Super Bowl, my first thought was, “Garrard is a better option than Flacco?”

Garrard threw for fewer yards, had a lower completion percentage and fewer touchdowns than Flacco in 2009. Plus, Garrard and the Jaguars failed to advance to the postseason, whereas Flacco’s Ravens made it to the Divisional playoff round.

But apparently, Flacco was invited to the Pro Bowl and declined because of his hip injury, according to Aaron Wilson’s RavensInsider Twitter account. There’s still no official word from Flacco himself on the matter.

I would love to see Joe out there with some receivers...oh well!
