  1. This is a decent game. Santonio Holmes just threw an INT. Stupid call by the Steelers...they just got their 1st INT by a corner this year and could have broke this game wide open and go for the trick play...no chance to complete it.

17-10 Steelers. If the Phish can hang in this half they have a shot...the Steelers fade in the second half.

    Texans 13-10 over Pats....Go Texans!!

  2. I don't agree with the title of the article..."Glum Ravens fans expected more this season"...I don't think we are 'Glum'..."Glum" is in Cleveland...I'm very excited this morning about the Ravens.. but I found this interesting...it's about consistency (so true)...from Valkenberg...

Quarterback Joe Flacco acknowledged that many struggling teams like to talk about how close they have come to winning more games in hopes of convincing themselves there are brighter days ahead.

"I think that's what you say when you're a team that's not had a great record and still has a shot," he said. "But there is some truth to the fact that we've had a tough road. We've played some tough teams, so we have experience in those types of games. We haven't always come out on the better side of those, but we'll look at those, and we use that as fuel to make sure we do come on the right side in this game and in the upcoming games."

A year ago, the Ravens weren't the flashiest team in the AFC, but they were able to rely on their strengths - running the ball and playing good defense. And although they have struggled with both at times this season, they've also excelled in those areas as well - just not consistently.

Running back Ray Rice was selected to the Pro Bowl after running for 1,269 yards and seven touchdowns in 15 games this season, and the team is ranked No. 3 in the NFL in total defense. The Ravens just haven't put it all together for long enough to make people believe they can be an elite team.

  3. If the offense puts up a lot of points today and the defense dominates then we'll all feel more confident about this team going into the playoffs. They could be peaking at the right time.

All of us are aware of the highs and lows of this 2009 Ravens team...it's strengths and weaknesses. Injuries are a factor too. So being overconfident is not on my menu. The stats say they could be going into the playoffs with a dominant D and very good offense (with a win today of course :) ) but like I said...we know their shortcommings too.

That said...every AFC playoff team has shortcommings so the Ravens have a decent shot to be competative against any team they meet.

What more could we ask for?

  4. I'm pumped!

"If you have a chance to get into the playoffs, you do it," Suggs said. "You definitely want to take advantage of that opportunity because there ain't no guarantee that you'll be back the next year, or if you'll ever go back again."

  5. Here's some IR updates...

The Ravens offense almost certainly will get left tackle Jared Gaither back for the must-win Oakland game. The three-year veteran missed the last three games with a foot injury, but practiced three times this week and is listed as probable on the final injury report.

With Gaither out of the lineup this season, the Ravens have lost three of five games, and the two wins came against the lowly Lions and Bears. Gaither's return will send rookie Michael Oher back to right tackle and Oniel Cousins back to the bench.

It also appears the Ravens will get back safety Ed Reed, who has missed four games with a groin or hip injury. Reed practiced this week as well and is expected to be able to take a dozen snaps or more in Oakland. Reed, however, is still listed as questionable.

Other questionables include wide receiver Derrick Mason (knee), linebackers Tavares Gooden (groin) and Terrell Suggs (thigh), cornerback Cary Williams (thigh) and Cousins (knee).

Gaither, linebacker Jarret Johnson (back, knee) and defensive end Trevor Pryce (illness) are probable.

The Raiders list quarterback Bruce Gradkowski (knees) as out and running back Justin Fargas (knee) and tackle Langston Walker (ankle) as doubtful. Safety Tyvon Branch (hip), defensive end Greg Ellis (knee), wide-out Darrius Heyward-Bey (foot) and cornerback Chris Johnson (hamstring) as questionable.

    http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/sports/ravens/blog/2010/01/friday_injury_report_1.html

Good to see Gaither back...he has a toe injury...not turf toe that ended J.O's career but it's a concern. I hope to see some road grading Sunday.

I doubt Reed plays...maybe to get some reps to get ready for the playoffs...we'll see.

  6. Here's pre game some info...

The Raiders could be stretched ultra-thin in the secondary for the season finale.

Starting cornerback Chris Johnson was unable to practice after straining a hamstring in practice Wednesday, and safety Tyvon Branch was limited in practice with a hip flexor issue. If Johnson can’t play, Stanford Routt can count on a full day of activity opposite of Nnamdi Asomugha. Rookie Mike Mitchell, whose role has increased in recent weeks, would step in for Branch. Branch’s condition will be re-evaluated Friday.

Left guard Langston Walker’s ankle wasn’t stable enough for him to go through practice, making it likely Chris Morris would be the starter. On its face, with Morris being some 60 pounds lighter than Walker, it would appear to be big matchup advantage for the Ravens with Kelly Gragg at center and Haloti Ngata at right tackle in the 3-4 defense.

    http://www.ibabuzz.com/oaklandraiders/2009/12/31/raiders-could-be-thin-in-secondary/#more-9212

Flacco better be very carefull throwing to Asomugha's side. The guy is a fantastic corner.

If you want something to worry about Hensley put up 3...

1 Penalties cost the Ravens again. The Ravens have to play smart. They are 1-4 when they are flagged at least nine times.

2 Turnovers level playing field. In their two December losses, the Ravens have totaled seven turnovers (four interceptions and three fumbles).

3 Ravens suffer another Steeler hangover. Since 2005, the Ravens have struggled to rebound from their games against Pittsburgh, going 2-7 in games after playing their AFC North rival.

Flacco is the best Ravens QB of the decade...already... and he's still a 'babe in the woods'.

Tell you what...look at that O line and I believe this current Ravens O line will be as good as those guys next year.

OH! Everybody! Check out this video on the past decade in Ravens history...you'll get goose bumps.

  11. I was reading an article on the Ravens website and thought we hadn't been talking about the great season Joe is having. It's not Pro Bowl worthy [he's ranked 13th amoung NFL QB's], but in his second season he has taken steps forward and is growing into a solid NFL starting QB.

I don't know about you but this is a breath of fresh air for me after what we, as fans, have lived through with Ravens QB's of the past. I've been hesitant to declare the Ravens have their long term franchise QB only because 10 years of futility have me in the "I'll believe it when I see it" mode.

    Well, I see it.

Defenses have more tape and experience playing against him but his numbers improved over last year. That is what I needed to see.

Joe's no fluke...no product of the system. Cam has put more on his sholders in year 2 and opened up the playbook.

    Here's the growth...

Last year, he became the first-ever rookie to win two playoff games in the NFL, helping guide the Ravens to an 11-5 regular-season record and the AFC Championship. Flacco went completed 257 of 428 passes for 2,971 yards, 14 touchdowns and 12 interceptions on the season.

This season, it’s clear that Flacco is more comfortable with offensive coordinator Cam Cameron’s system and the players around him, as the signal-caller is doing more to move the football. He is now 304-of-480 for 3,511 yards with 21 scores and 12 picks.

A win Sunday and he will continue his string of leading the Ravens into the playoffs.

    Not too shabby.

Joe is also in with some great company...

Flacco's maturation is on pace with some of the NFL's most-respected quarterbacks, however. Through his first 31 games, Flacco has a higher quarterback rating than Petyon Manning posted in his first 32 contests. He has thrown for nearly 500 more yards than the Chargers' Philip Rivers did through his first two seasons. Flacco is averaging more passing yards per game than Tom Brady did over the same span.

Statistically, Flacco is having a slightly better sophomore season than Brady and Rivers had. His quarterback rating is a hair off Manning's (89.5 versus Manning's 90.7).

    The future?

Ozzie's got him the line and the running game.

Now...think of what Joe can do with an upgraded receiving corps.

  12. The D has really tightened up...quietly... during the second half of the season. Makes sense...injuries...new players...new DC...it took some time to gel.

Their problem is getting off the field on 3rd down. Also they are 30th in the league with 32 penalties that gave their opponents 1st downs. Another reason they can't get off the field.

  13. The Suggs package is ok against the lesser disciplined defenses. It is not an every game option. The good D's stop it cold.

I think it's a distraction and way over rated. I'd rather have Flacco under center and Ray Rice beside him. Troy's QB rating for this year is 21.3 with a 2.67 yards per attempt. I don't feel the need to see him in any game.

I believe it's Troy's agent who should get the blame for the timing on this.
