  1. The root of this issue is that you stated that Torrey Smith isn't the #1 type of receiver, that he is a burner. In this post and since, you guys have mentioned at least three or four "types" of receivers, i.e. possession guys, burners, hybrid WRs, slot-type WRs, bigger guys, smaller guys, etc. And in this post alone, you have all those types of receivers mentioned as "#1 types". Therefore, I don't understand your conclusion as it pertains to Smith's inability to become a #1 receiver, because you've provided no other type of evidence.

Even though I think he has every chance to be a superstar-type, I would have nothing against an opinion stating that Smith can never rise above the #2 WR, burner kind of player. This argument simply provides nothing to that end.

This is the main issue at hand and outlines the entire circumstance of whether we even need to draft a WR, because we do have the depth.

Who did I say were #1 receivers besides Kenny Britt, Hakeem Nicks, and big, strong guys like that? DeSean Jackson?

I went through the past decade of drafts and listed all of the guys who have had success at any receiver spot, just for the sake of easy reference. Was not suggesting that ALL LISTED were #1 types.

  2. Rice is awesome, and I'm sure we'll get him signed to a reasonable deal.

But if it was a matter of overpaying him, I'd let it ride in a heartbeat. RB is, without question, the easiest position in the NFL to replace.

  3. You think we'll overpay to keep Flacco specifically because of how much we've struggled over the years to find a better-than-average quarterback?

There was a stretch there where we were going through 2 or 3 quarterbacks a season... and Flacco hasn't missed a game in his 4 years. This may be worth an extra few million a year, specifically because of our organization's history. Just a thought.

  4. We can't know for sure where to place all the blame... there's just as much of a chance that Flacco is making his receivers look bad as that they're making him look bad. Every team has drops, but guys like Brady and Manning consistently make mediocre-to-bad receiving talent look like pro bowlers. Torrey Smith and LaQuan Williams? Manning had Garcon and Collie. And there was a year when Brady's #1 receiver was Jabar Gaffney and he still threw for 4400 yds and 28 TD - without ever having a running game like we do.

It's Cam's fault, it's Joe's fault and it's the receivers' fault. And you could always argue that one creates the other, but we really have no idea.

  5. Oh come on. You guys are something else.

Flacco over Eli? Flacco over Romo? And to think there I have been accused of being a homer at times... that's a whole different level of homerism.

No one would take Flacco over Eli or Romo or any of those other guys. Heck, no one would take Flacco over Cam Newton.

  6. Spear your list blows, especially the bottom tier,Flacco is better than Vick, RYAN, Cutler, Stafford & Romo.

Ryan MAYBE, but not definitely... Stafford is definitely better, if he could stay healthy... Romo and Vick are in a tier above Flacco altogether... Cutler is a baby, but he's better than Flacco.

Like I said above - the list isn't in a very definitive order, but I'd definitely take any of those guys above Flacco if I were starting a team from scratch and the guys were all in their prime.

Flacco is promising, but he's not a top-tier QB. And before the AFCC game, this wouldn't even be a question. But he did have a great game (against the worst pass-defense in AFCC history, with receivers covering Anquan Boldin and practice-squad players covering Lee Evans). But he did play a pretty good game.

  7. I wouldn't even go that high. I say he's somewhere around the 13-16 range. I just threw together a quick list of how I perceive the top quarterbacks in the NFL... and I included Peyton Manning and Jay Cutler. These were my top 15... didn't put a TON of thought into the order, but it's a good model.

1 Aaron Rodgers 2 Tom Brady 3 Peyton Manning 4 Eli Manning 5 Ben Roethlisberger 6 Drew Brees 7 Philip Rivers 8 Tony Romo 9 Matthew Stafford 10 Jay Cutler 11 Matt Ryan 12 Michael Vick 13 Joe Flacco 14 Cam Newton 15 Carson Palmer

  8. That is not the point you were making before. I am saying he was underdrafted because his attitude sucked. You were saying it was his size. Many teams would take him. The question is when will they take him? It is about risk reward benefit. The later they drafted him the cheaper he was so if he acts like an ass then you can let him sit and not care. There is a reason why the Eagles didn't give him a new deal. They don't trust him with lots of cash.

And my original point is that, regardless of which circumstances, receivers often fall much further down the draft than they would based on talent alone. Receivers have been falling further and further the past 5 years, with the number drafted in the first 3 rounds declining every season.

    </h2>

Now maybe if he really falls the Ravens could trade back 5-6 spots get this guy anyway and also some more picks.

That, or will decide he isn't even worth a pick in the first 3 rounds because he can't read an offense to save his life and consistently gets in fights on and off the field, in practice and around campus.

And this is coming from a guy who has him as his profile icon.

  10. Considering the Giants just won the Super bowl with the last-ranked rushing offense in the NFL... I don't think it matters. Green Bay was 27th, and they went 15-1. And often played with a lead (which should up your rushing numbers). New England 20th.

    #1 Denver #3 Carolina #4 Minnesota #5 Philly

    For whatever it's worth...

  11. He still has the I will try when I want to or Randy Mossitis. He is a spoiled child.

And I'd take either of those guys (in their prime) because when they're "trying", they're unstoppable.

Jackson's punt return against the Giants last year? Incredible.

  12. Kenny Britt is definitely #1. DeSean was underdrafted because he weighed 165 lbs and played receiver, not (just) because of his attitude. Plenty of jerks get drafted high.

Lee Evans was a #1 in Buffalo...he could be that guy... he had an injury-plagued guy...not sure about that one.

For the record, I wasn't saying all of those guys are #1's...just showing all of the receivers who have had some measure of success, and where they were drafted. It's not one of those "the top guys are usually first rounders" positions, at all. Tons of first-round busts and late successes, as you can see.

  13. If you ask me, the FO is very smart with this move, Tag Rice work on Joe..Because, say by fortune we won the SB next season and Flacco is an FA, his agent throws at Steve 5 straight trips to the playoffs, 3 AFCCG and a SB ring...Thats definately worth Manning Money..

This way, the FO is saving money, last years Tag for a RB was worth 10 mil this year its 7.1 mil, so right there the Ravens saved, just wishing there was some how a way to fit Grubbs into the fold..Just looking ahead, Birk has to retire we lose Grubbs theres 2/5ths of the O-Line lost.

If we're worried about Joe winning the Super Bowl... I'd say that's the kind of problem you're happy with at that point.

  14. The Ravens are at 29. There are guys who fall but it is not all the time. Cruz was I think a 5th rounder. Exceptions are not the rule. Also the OL is in need of help. IF Joe is on his back he can't throw to a stud WR.

With WR's it is. Receiver is one of the most undervalued position in the draft. Go look through the last decade of WR's and where they were picked. I broke it up by early first (19th overall or earlier), Mid (20-26), and Late (later than 27th) Don't worry too much about that part... I don't know why I did it that way.

  15. There are very few of those super star great WR's. You have to be drafting quite high to get a guy like that most of the time. Smith is their #1.

No you don't - those guys are late 1st/2nd round guys all the time. Hakeem nicks, 29th. Britt 30th. Even boldin was a 2nd. Brandon Marshall, Colston, mike wallace, steve smith, T.O., Ochocinco, desean Jackson, etc. Even dez Bryant fell to what, 24? And he was hyped!

Just saying. Receivers fall A LOT more than other positions.

there are tons of examples of this.
