vmax Posted November 12, 2009 Share Posted November 12, 2009 I've been putting this up for years...The Curse of Art Modell. ...From the time the Cleveland Browns returned to the NFL in 1999, they have been a cursed franchise. There have been bad first-round picks, crushing injuries and widespread illnesses.........My theory is the curse of Art Modell. The Cleveland fans’ hatred of Modell, the owner who relocated the team from Cleveland to Baltimore, has placed bad karma on the current Browns team. vmax Posted November 12, 2009 Author Share Posted November 12, 2009 The Browns fans are close to getting it right.They are pissed off at Lerner...so pissed that they will probably not be in the stands for the opening kick off.That's a big statement but they can really get it right if they march in with "Put Art in the Hall" signs. He's a solid writer and I think he's been reading stuf about the 'Curse of Art Modell' over the years and did the Browns fans a favor by posting it on the Sun sports page. It will get national recognition there...something I don't have...It's a good time to get this out. Seriously...I still believe it was Lerner and Policy, with a Mayor on their payroll, that backed Art into a financial corner. Then Lerner convinced Art that he wouldn't get a new stadium and the revenue that he needed, convinced him that moving the team was his only way out, and then put him on his private plane (Art thinking they were going to Baltimore together) and then bowed out sending Art alone. That set the knife in Art's back. Conspiracy, betrayel, lies, treachery...greed. Art is too good of a man to go public with this. It hurts him too much. I too have heard you say this for years. It might have some merit, the Modell Curse! However I dont think Lerner railroaded Art, I think they were both in on the move together. Didnt the moving papers get signed in Al's jet? They either had a falling out afterwards or a fake one so Al was in better position to get the Cleveland franchise. Spen..I have no doubt that this is your typical corporate, back room, back stabbing takeover...it has Shakesperean elements with trusted friends and associates setting the knife. Lerner convinced Art he had no options other than to sell or move. It killed Art to have to surrender to this because of his love for Cleveland, the Browns and their fans. Art has blame in this...he wasn't a good businessman but if he would have had a new stadium with the sky box money he would have been ok. Instead everybody else got stadiums and the R&R HOF thanks to the Mayor and City Council. Lerner told Art that they would take his plane and fly to Baltimore together. Then with some BS excuse, he jumped ship at the last minute and Art flew to Balitmore alone to sign the papers.If Lerner is on that plane with him and in Baltimore, then no way he gets the franchise. Instead he set himself up as Clevelands savior. Art knew he was set up by his partners to take the fall alone. He still can't talk about it.
