papasmurfbell Posted July 16, 2010 Posted July 16, 2010 http://www.nj.com/yankees/index.ssf/2010/07/family_friends_honor_bob_shepp.html Family, friends honor Bob Sheppard at funeral, but not Yankees players Family, friends and members of the Yankees organization, his employer for 57 years, honored legendary Yankee Stadium public address announcer Bob Sheppard on Thursday at his funeral. Conspicuous in their absence, however, were Yankees players. None of the current or former Yankees attended the ceremony, according to a Daily News report. Yankees general manager Brian Cashman eulogized Sheppard, who died July 11 at 99. The funeral was also attended by Giants president John Mara. Sheppard was the public address announcer for the Giants from 1956-2006, dating back to when the team played its home games at Yankee Stadium. You put in 56 yr and nobody can come to your funeral. Stay classy NY. Quote
cravnravn Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 I dont get it...But this time they cant blame a decision from George on their no-show. Quote
dc. Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 When Elrod died, didn't only one or two current Orioles attend? I want to say Mora was the one, but I may be wrong... Quote
Spen Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 When Elrod died, didn't only one or two current Orioles attend? I want to say Mora was the one, but I may be wrong... I thought of that the other day when I read this thread. I agree, if I recall correctly Mora was the only current player to attend Elrod's funeral. Quote
papasmurfbell Posted July 19, 2010 Author Posted July 19, 2010 It was Mora. I got to thinking the other day. McNair died and people from all over the league showed. The DC's wife for the Bengals died last yr and the whole team posted for the funeral. Is it something of a cultural thing between baseball and football? Quote
dc. Posted July 19, 2010 Posted July 19, 2010 I don't know about that... For Elrod, the O's a few years ago when he passed were a very young club. And Elrod had been on leave from the team for a while, right? So, Mora may have been one of few 'current' O's to know him. But there was a mass gathering of former teammates and coaches. For the Yankees announcer... it may sound mean, but he was an announcer. Not the type that was around the team, I have a feeling - especially not like a coach. But there may be something to the idea that there is more of a 'brotherhood' in football as opposed to baseball. Quote
