There has been an unusual amount of secrecy.  Maybe it's because it was even quality of life beyond football that was at stake as well. For example, maybe they were afraid of paralysis if he took the wrong kind of hit. I get the impression that the surgery alleviated those concerns. For his sake I hope that's true.
