You'll still get a pretty heavy fine if caught. I don't know why they just don't sell/tax it like alcohol and tobacco.

Maryland's legislature has given final approval to a bill that would eliminate criminal charges for possessing small amounts of marijuana, and the governor says he plans to sign it. The Senate voted Monday to accept several compromises the House added over the weekend. The bill would keep marijuana use illegal but make it a kin to a traffic violation. The House opted to require all teen offenders to be evaluated for treatment. It also voted to raise the penalties to $250 for a second offense and $500 for a third, up from a maximum fine of $100. Gov. Martin O'Malley, a Democrat, said Monday he has changed his views on decriminalization. He says it reflects the public's will and could lead to greater focus on more serious threats to public safety.

You mean Owe'Malley the anti casino/pot person who changes his mind when its convenient? To know his deepest morals all you have to do is look at the latest public opinion poll.... The man who ran a negative campaign against Ehrlich with the great slogan "a fee is a tax", then creates the rain tax.... That O'Malley?

No it is not the polls that push him. It is what is politically expedient. During Erlichs admin the polls said they wanted casinos but Lil Marty was aginst it.

You know I am always torn on these.

If it was a job, not school, where would you fall? Your boss can certainly have an opinion on your out of work activities and opinions.

As a teacher I invite my students to have opinions, but I also know that schools need to care about what happens out of school - because it find its way into school and the community. It's a fine line to draw.

I tend to come down on the site of the student and the actions of the school especially in trying to cover their tracks are gross. But I can't be 100% convinced that students lives outside of school are separate from their school identities.

Sure. You do not have a 1st amendment right with a private business. A public school on the otehr hand you do get that right.

No, I know a public school is not a business. But schools are also unique from other public institutions in the responsibility they have for minors. Maintaining safety and stability in a school of even just 1000 students is not a small feat. And I am somewhat (major emphasis there) sympathetic to the idea that a school's role can't end at 3pm because what happens after 3pm comes into school the next day.

I understand. I am not taking either side. I'm just telling you that when you walk into a school, every post on every website is playing a part in how that school community functions. And it's really hard.

I personally know how to engage students in discussing views without shutting conversation down... But many do not. And I benefit from a school community that is strong to begin with.
