He proved in POs we still need him and he'll give usmore depth to make another SB run. He is one boneheaded move away from a full season suspension and he's getting old so I don't believe he should get an extension. That leaves being cut or traded. There is plenty of young, talented depth, as shown in the games last year, including the four games he missed. The player they need is McPhee, not Ngata. If we can get him to restructure, Ngata would be extremely effective playing a reduced amount of snaps keeping him fresh. He breaks down easily but I think he still has great value as a part time player. We have the young depth upfront to go with this strategy. We've got reserves ready to step in and as has been pointed out, at 31 years old that's a ridiculous number for any DT (16 mil). They only need $8 mil and change of space since his bonus money will still apply to the Ravens. A team could be willing to take that. I think a 3rd would be reasonable in return. He is currently re-negotiating now according to theRavens site and they're of course delicate as the site said. So we keep him at a reduced rate and McPhee could go the way of Ellerbe soit would be a double bogie to lose Ngata and McPhee. Journigan was playing and giving him a rest all season but when Journiganwent down, Ngata stepped up. We won in Piss in the trenches. Restructuring might help Ravens to keep both Ngata and McPhee. Despite the 4-game suspension, he still led the Ravens linemen in defensive snaps played (Williams was second at 585). The other available linemen can do a piece of what he can, but Ngata remains the Ravens’ only true 3-down down lineman.What was there to like about his season? When active, he played well. PFF pegged him with just 1 missed tackle all season.When did he play best? He generated good pressure at Pittsburgh in the Wild Card game.When did he play poorly? After a key 4th-and-1, goalline stop (Q1, 12:28), he was ineffective versus the Saints and committed a costly roughing the passer penalty to give the Saints a 3rd-down conversion that led to a FG. It’s pretty cool when a player still has a huge game in his worst game of the season.What was his signature play of 2014? With the Ravens leading 26-6 in the week 2 game versus Pittsburgh in Baltimore, Ngata tipped Roethlisberger’s pass then moved far to his right for a diving interception. It reminded me of his interception at Houston in 2008 and I cannot recall an interior lineman ever making a more acrobatic play.What does he need to do better? Stay on the field and be flexible in contract restructuring.Grades: Play B+, Value C, Developmental C-. His play on the field improved, but Ngata set himself back with the PED violation and that will cost him millions in career earnings. The reaction of both he and his teammates to the event is a model for such incidents, however. When Haloti returned for the playoffs he played as if he never left. If the Ravens don’t improve the offer a stalemate may ensue and it would force the Ravens to part ways with the highly decorated defensive lineman.Team owner Steve Bisciotti when asked about Ngata’s contract status on Tuesday, may have provided hints that an impasse could happen.“I think that’s a little more in Ozzie’s [hands]. They have young talent that can pick up the slack should Ngata depart and that was proven during the four-game stretch to close the regular season when the Ravens yielded only 60 points, going (3-1) while holding opponents to 377 total net rushing yards and sacking opponents 18 times.Of course the Ravens d-line rotations would be better with Ngata around but if Ozzie Newsome can find a much less expensive free agent or another rookie who can perform above the level of his contract (as Ozzie has done so often), then the rotations might not suffer measurably and the team would have $8.5M in freed up cap space.Word is Ngata isn’t afraid to leave Baltimore, despite the anticipated loss of his Royal Farms endorsement dollars. With cap room and a need for someone like Ngata, plus the shared affection with Colts head coach Chuck Pagano who is still stinging from his team being steamrolled by LeGarrette Blount, Indianapolis could be a nice fit for Haloti. Given the apparent lack of desire to really be here, which started with last year's contract extension negotiations, I don't think Ngata is going to remain a Raven. Fortunately, the D-line is solid even without him. Sure it'd be better if he was around but not that much better. Plus, how much does he have left at his age? And if he goes, the Ravens get an additional 8 million in cap space. The guy they really have to re-sign is Owen Daniels. He wants to be here, he's a contributor and play maker and dependable. That's why I'd love MaxxWilliams in the first or Clive Walford if we could get himin the 2d. Oz would have to trade up like he didwith A. Brown. We'd look pretty young and solid withGilmore and either one of those two at TE. As for Tony Lombardi, his sources have been wrong beforeand he apologized each time.
