The Ravens have until Wednesday afternoon tomake a decision about adding tight end Dennis Pitta to the active roster or end his chances of playing in 2015, which meant that Pitta spent some time huddling with doctors this week about whether he could resume his playing career after dislocating his hip twice in the last two seasons.

Jamison Hensley of ESPN.com reports that those doctors are advising Pitta not to play “because it isn’t safe” for him to put his hip through the rigors of the game. Pitta has been practicing with the Ravens for a few weeks, although he’s been in a non-contact jersey and would obviously have to expose his hip to hits if he does make a full return.

Hensley adds that Pitta could decide to ignore the medical advice and push on with his comeback effort. When he began practicing with the team last month, Pitta said he understood the risks “quite well” and that he knew that not getting back this year would make it highly unlikely that he’d ever make it back to game action.

A move to activate Pitta, who has 138 catches for 1,369 yards and 11 touchdowns in his career, must be made by 4 p.m. ET.
