If smaller, quicker defenses are built to stop the pass, why not turn back the clock to the power football of the 1970s and '80s?.............http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000000663325/article/titans-cowboys-rams-returning-to-power-football

I love the idea. Turn back the clock.

When the Ravens run with power most defenses are worn out by the 4th quarter.

It seems to me Marshawn Lynch gains most of his yards and big runs in the 4th quarter.

They don't make big backs who can carry the load of an NFL season any more, college wears em out. Derrick Henry should be a good test and even then, he will be sharing the load.

Also, they, bigger backs, need running lanes, most lineman are, collectively, good at run blocking or pass blocking. Rarely both, consitantly, even then, if they are, they are too expensive to keep along with the highly paid running back...

Good point about the running lanes.

How many times did we see Jamal simply run into a wall of the backs of his lineman for little or no gain.

Still....that wore the defenses down. That's why he wanted his 20+ touches and the ball in the 4th quarter.

Oh yes, a running game will wear a defense down by punishing them, but also by ball control, getting first downs, keep them on the field longer.

But as you pointed out, Jamal often times was a dancing bear when there were no lanes. Add to that, big backs just don't last, they take a punishment, Brandon Jacobs, Jamal, nust two examples, short careers.

A balanced offense can do the same; wear a defense down just by keeping them on the field longer. Long drives work well too.. Just look at the Ravens last season, their offense could not sustain drives, their defense could not get off the field. By the end of tehe games, the defense could not stop a toddler...
