11:01 a.m.: The Ravens waive rookie wide receiver Jaylen Smith, according to Tom Pelissero.

 

11:03 a.m.: The Ravens release offensive tackle Darrell Williams, according to Aaron Kasinitz.

 

12:03 p.m.: The Ravens waive guard Patrick Vahe and offensive lineman Randin Crecelius has been sidelined with a concussion, according to Jamison Hensley.

 

1:03 p.m.: The Ravens waive outside linebacker Shane Ray, according to Jamison Hensley.

 

1:11 p.m.: The Ravens have cut linebacker Silas Stewart, according to Jeff Zrebiec.

 

4:02 p.m.: The Ravens announced the official release of 11 players. Among the new announcments are quarterback Joe Callahan, wide receiver Joe Horn Jr., wide receiver Michael Floyd, tight end Matt Orzech and guard Isaiah Williams.

The Baltimore Ravens pulled a surprise in the midst of roster cuts Friday when they decided to release Willie Henry, once thought to be a vital member of the team, according to reports.

Baltimore won’t officially waive Henry until Saturday, leaving open the possibility that the team could trade him, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. If the Ravens don’t field offers for a deal and wind up cutting Henry, he’ll land on the waiver wire, where any team can put in a claim for him.

Scott used an outstanding training camp and preseason to become one of six wide receivers on the roster. Free agent acquisition Seth Roberts also made it, joining the receivers who were roster locks Willie Snead IV, Chris Moore, and rookies Marquise Brown and Miles Boykin.

This may come back to bite them unless they plan on a fa pick up, there isn't much depth with 5 dlinemen.

 

 

The Ravens kept just five defensive linemen Brandon Williams, Michael Pierce, Chris Wormley, Patrick Ricard and rookie Daylon Mack.

Running back Kenneth Dixon was placed on injured reserve after suffering an injury during the preseason finale against the Washington Redskins. The Ravens will carry three running backs on the 53-man roster Mark Ingram II, Gus Edwards and rookie Justice Hill.

 

 

 

 

Two undrafted rookies made the roster, offensive lineman Patrick Mekari and inside linebacker Otaro Alaka, extending the Ravens undrafted streak to 16 straight years. An offensive lineman from Cal, Mekari played center, guard, and tackle against the Redskins and his versatility as a backup was an asset. The Ravens kept nine offensive linemen, including Greg Senat, who was on the roster bubble. An inside linebacker from Texas A&M, Alaka gives the Ravens added depth at a position where they need it behind Patrick Onwuasor, Chris Board and Kenny Young.

 

Cyrus Jones made the roster as the primary punt returner and will also play nickel cornerback. Running back Tyler Ervin, who also did well returning punts during the preseason, was released.

Lamar Jackson, Robert Griffin III, Trace McSorley

Breakdown: McSorley’s convincing preseason performance was evidently enough to earn him a spot on the roster. It’ll be interesting to see if the Ravens utilize him on special teams or in gadget formations throughout the year. The team is clearly confident that RGIII will be healthy and active for Week 1.

Running Back (3)

Mark Ingram, Gus Edwards, Justice Hill

The wildcard here was Kenneth Dixon, who many speculated could either make the roster, be traded, or get released. Neither of these scenarios came to fruition, though, as instead he was placed on injured reserve. Dixon’s season is over before it started and so too could be his tenure in Baltimore, as the fourth-year RB is set to hit free agency following this year. The Ravens have a talented, versatile trio between Mark Ingram, Gus Edwards, and Justice Hill.

Offensive Line (9)

Marshal Yanda, Ronnie Stanley, Matt Skura, James Hurst, Orlando Brown Jr., Bradley Bozeman, Patrick Mekari, Ben Powers, Greg Senat

Eric DeCosta and company opted to keep a good amount of offensive lineman, which makes sense after trading away Alex Lewis and Jermaine Eluemunor. UDFA Patrick Mekari’s strong showing in recent weeks, on top of his versatility, earned him a spot on the roster. Greg Senat is the most surprising name of the bunch,but he’s one of the few natural tackles on the team and possesses some untapped upside. The starting LG job is still up in the air but the Ravens are evidently confident in either Hurst, Powers, Mekari, or Bozeman.

Tight End (3)

Mark Andrews, Hayden Hurst, Nick Boyle

No surprises here. One of the most talented tight end groups in the league remains intact, while the team released Cole Herdman and Charles Scarff. Look for one of these guys, if not both, to land on the practice squad.

Wide Receiver (6)

Marquise Brown, Miles Boykin, Chris Moore, Willie Snead IV, Jaleel Scott, Seth Roberts

The first four names listed above were roster locks, but uncertainty lied in the final two receiver spots. Second-year man Jaleel Scott rightfully made the 53-man roster after an impressive body of work throughout OTA’s, training camp, and preseason. Scott’s main contributions this season may come on special teams, but he’s certainly a big-play threat and redzone target. The additional WR spot was won by Seth Roberts, who some presumed could be bumped out in favor of Michael Floyd. Roberts’ injury limited him almost all preseason but his blocking ability is superior to Floyd’s.

Defensive Line (5)

Brandon Williams, Michael Pierce, Patrick Ricard, Chris Wormley, Daylon Mack

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the weekend was the team’s decision to release Willie Henry on friday night. Henry was projected to have a big role on the defensive line this season given his ability to provide interior pass-rushing. Patrick Ricard’s dominant preseason showing evidently made Henry expendable, though, and the Ravens are confident in rookie Daylon Mack providing some of Henry’s production. Neither Zach Sieler or UDFA Gerald Willis III made the team, which some thought would come to fruition following Henry’s release. The team’s top three d-lineman remain intact: Pierce, Williams, and Wormley.

Linebacker (9)

Patrick Onwuasor, Kenny Young, Chris Board, Otara Alaka, Matthew Judon, Tim Williams, Pernell McPhee, Tyus Bowser, Jaylon Ferguson

Along with Patrick Mekari, rookie Otara Alaka will continue the team’s streak of UDFA making the 53-man roster. Alaka will play a special teams role and provide depth behind Patrick Onwuasor, Kenny Young, and Chris Board. Anthony Levine Sr. is also going to play linebacker in nickel packages. At outside linebacker, former first-round pick Shane Ray was released on Friday after no-showing throughout the preseason. Matthew Judon and Pernell McPhee are entrenched as the starters with youngsters Jaylon Ferguson, Tim Williams, and Tyus Bowser set to provide much-needed pass-rushing help.

Defensive Back (12)

Tony Jefferson, Earl Thomas, Chuck Clark, DeShon Elliott, Anthony Levine Sr., Marlon Humphrey, Jimmy Smith, Brandon Carr, Anthony Averett, Cyrus Jones, Justin Bethel, Iman Marshall

The Ravens secondary is deep and talented. Justin Bethel and rookie Iman Marshall are the only surprises here. Marshall was a prime candidate for IR given his injury status over the past several weeks, but the decision to put him on the 53-man roster suggests he’ll be ready to go next Sunday. Justin Bethel was signed earlier this offseason and managed to beat out Brynden Trawick and Maurice Canaday for the final cornerback spot. Bethel’s main value is on special teams, like Cyrus Jones. Jones, however, has shown potential as a slot cornerback and could end up playing a lot of snaps with Tavon Young on IR. Jones is also the team’s primary return man.

Special Teams (3)

Justin Tucker, Sam Koch, Morgan Cox

The “wolfpack” isn’t going anywhere.

I love the tight ends, real tights ends who can both block and get seperation in man, easily move through zone. Andrews & Boyle in my opnion are the better of the three, if Nick can stop his penalties & trying to jump over everyone. They really need to use them more down the middle, they are match up nightmares.

 

The offensive line concerns me, I am hoping Zeus Jr improves greatly, he was quite inconsistent last year. There really is no power in the middle, both guards, who ever they may be, are weak, but we shall see.

 

The linebackers are raw, fast but raw, not great in passing situations. Time will tell if the secondary can stay healthy and stay on the same page...

I was high on his signing because of his potential, how well he played in college at left tackle.

 

Maybe this is the year he takes the next step in his evolution as a guard, I hope so, good guy, hard worker, team player.

Ah, my bad, I hope he comes along, he has not been much of a blocker and has struggled getting off the line of scrimmage. He was the "needed more work" type of player even though the Ravens reached for him in the draft. Could trio, no doubt.

It is the way they use TEs in college. They don't need to block so they aren't ready for it. Also many don't run the tree well coming out.

Just read where Pro Football Focus rated the Ravens offensive line #11 in the NFL> Here's what they said about LG:

 

" Rookie fourth-rounder Ben Powers looks set to start at left guard for the Ravens, and that’s probably not a bad thing after seeing him this preseason. He didn’t allow a single pressure on 107 pass-blocking snaps although we would like to see him clean up his four penalties. "

Well, I find the part; "not one single pressure" to be false. In the last game, as I said I watched him get walked back, over extend where his feet just about stepped on Trace's as he tried to pass.

 

This happened on a few plays. He does have good potential, but he has a long way to go.

That may indeed be true, but I see him as the best of a rag-tag bunch at LG.

 

FWIW, I do think PFF overrated the Ravens O-line at #11.
