Guest BallTMore Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 The Baltimore Ravens have promoted linebackers coach Greg Mattison to defensive coordinator to replace Rex Ryan, sources said on Sunday. Also promoted was special assistant Vic Fangio, who will become the assistant head coach/defense and coach linebackers, the sources said. Mattison had been a longtime college defensive coach -- most recently for the University of Florida -- before he joined Ravens coach John Harbaugh's staff prior to the 2008 season. An announcement is expected shortly. Ravens officials could not be reached for comment late Sunday night. http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=3860312 Quote
ForceEight Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 I'm not as surprised as I thought I'd be, but this move still seems kind of strange, considering the circumstances of how he came to be in the NFL. Nevertheless, I'm happy about the move and happy for Greg Mattison! Fangio as assistant head coach is a big deal, too! Quote
RavensNest8483 Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 Mattison was the lb coach. I think this move shows they are trying to keep the lbs happy, by hiring someone that they are familiar with. Prolly hoping this will urge the lbs to stay here in Balt. Quote
vmax Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 The Sun reports that Rosburg is now assistant head coach and Fangio new LBs coach. Somebodies got it wrong. http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/footbal...0,7828736.story I heard the Mattison interview...he seems like a great guy but talks real slow and appeared 'timid'. He comes off nothing like Rex. He does believe in attacking and putting players in the best position to make plays. He will study last years defense and keep what worked. At 60 and with only 1 year coaching in the NFL this is a very risky move. This "ain't Michigan". He's got to move and think at lightning speed game day to keep this defensive legacy going. I have my doubts. I hope Harbaugh 's lucky horseshoe doesn't tarnish with this move. I will try to keep up my trust and faith in John...he's made all the right moves so far. Quote
thundercleetz Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 I do not know anything about Mattison except he has big shoes to fill. Hopefully there is no drop off. Quote
vmax Posted January 26, 2009 Posted January 26, 2009 I sound like I'm not openminded on this hire, but I am. I'm just getting all my negative thoughts out first. Defense is the only reason the Baltimore Ravens can feel they have a godd chance to win in every game. It is what keeps this team competative. There are tons of offenses in the NFL with so many different personel matchups. He's only seen a certain percentage of them. He could be in over his head. Look how Rex kept making moves in the Titans playoff game as player after player went down. He kept the dam from busting with duct tape. Can Greg do that? I have this image of skins coach Joe Bugle wandering the sidelines looking for his headset and waking up to find the second quarter was over. Age. This is a huge generation gap with the players. This 2008 D had Rex's personality. He wants to slaughter everybody. What is Greg's? Publicly, he came off as a 2 on an agressive/confident scale of 10. I don't know Greg...I just don't see a Marvin Lewis/Rex Ryan/Mike Nolan/ Jack Del Rio" in him. Man...I really hope my first impressions are wrong. I admire the loyaly of promoting from within, but there are a huge amount of defensive coaches out there looking for work. A ton with 11 HC changes this year. That would have been my pool rather than the "college" ranks. Quote
ravinmaniac52 Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 It is ggod to see that the owner has faith in Fangio. I think we knew it was going to be Mattison. What is it that Ray said, "you want to become a head coach, come coach me." These coaches are not the same coaches, like I said back in training camp, these guys are very smart football wise. These aren't laptop guys. There is no need to have that big of a fire on the sidelines with a fire like that on the field. My wonder is how much trick there with his game? Will he use the 4-3 as base? Quote

You nailed my problem with him. He has stated in the past that he had no intention of really ever entering the NFL, unless it was a perfect situation. He's basically said that his home is Gainesville. More frighteningly, he said he only joined the Ravens because he's such good friends with Harbaugh. Source: http://www.gatorsports.com/article/2008021...S/37419397/1090 I'm nervous to see how it works. I really didn't think he was the man for the job, and that we had others who'd fit the mentality and the necessary shoes at least as well. We'll see. Best of luck to him. Quote
83eh01 Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I don't like the idea of friends on a coaching staff Perlozzo and Mazzone didn't work out  Quote

thundercleetz Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I don't know Greg...I just don't see a Marvin Lewis/Rex Ryan/Mike Nolan/ Jack Del Rio" in him. Man...I really hope my first impressions are wrong. This is exactly how I see it. I do not have that same comfort that I had when Nolan took over, then when Rex took over. Both of these guys had that "up and coming" quality to them where you could see that this was a stepping stone for something bigger. I do not see that in Greg, I think he might be in over his head. We would have probably been better off just raiding the Steelers staff. I hope I am wrong though, I will give Harbaugh the benefit of the doubt. Quote
vmax Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I feel more optimistic about Mattison after reading these player quotes... He's the coordinator now. That's a great thing," Ravens outside linebacker Jarret Johnson said. "He has tons of experience. Personally, I had a great coach the year before in Jeff FitzGerald, but he gave you a lot of information. Coach Mattison just simplifies things. He really helped me with my technique. I suspect there will be some different wrinkles, but if he wants to blitz linebackers more, I'm totally into it." Suggs said: "I don't know if he can be another Rex Ryan. They are some mighty big shoes to fill, but if anybody can fill them, it's Coach Mattison. I don't foresee a lot of changes because good coaches build their systems around the players, and we already have the players in place." http://www.baltimoresun.com/sports/footbal...0,496986.column Quote
yagersports Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I hope he sticks with a similar philosophy as Rex, and he can actually execute said philosophy. I'm having flashbacks to the bend but don't break Mike Nolan era, couldn't stand that defense, just not "Ravens" football. Although, a defense that I wouldn't mind seeing installed if organized chaos cannot function with Rex is the cover two. It's been very successful and I feel we have the personel to make it work. Quote
vmax Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Yeager...on the cover two...we know the Ravens defense set the points surrendered record with it and won a Super Bowl. They executed it to perfection. What pisses me off is that the cover two has been around a long time and the media...the brainless media...had to name it the Tampa Two after they won a Super Bowl...like they invented it or something. SpearSrai Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 Ask Try Smith how good of a defensive coordinator Mattison is. Then again, he may not even remember. Quote
thundercleetz Posted January 27, 2009 Posted January 27, 2009 I hope one thing that changes is the ability to switch out of the blitz. The Steelers were killing us by delaying their snap counts for us to show our blitzes. Why would we run the same blitz when we have already shown the offensive line what we are going to do? Either have another blitz to switch to on the fly or check out. That was one of the things that annoyed me the most in that Steelers game. Quote
