  1. Hopefully in this short bye week not only is the defense getting some rest, but also studying how to keep the edge.

Teams have been killing them running on the edge, usually to the defense's left.

Fix that, fix staying in your rush lane against mobile quarterbacks, and while this team is leading the league in sacks, if there was a Stat for missed sacks, they might be leading there as well. So relearn how to sack a qb, how to wrap up šŸ˜€

  2. The tackle that seals his angry, intent to injure is the one on Obj. To use a term from an idiot ref who is now retired, he tackles with malice in his heart.

He didn't just tackle Obj, he drove him to the ground and made sure his body was fully on top of Obj.

There are a number of ways to tackle someone, most are lower in % of injury risk. The way he tackles, 90% risk of injury.

  3. I'm no doctor, though I did stay at a Holiday Inn Express, but the hit Clowney put on Burrow did not cause a tear in Burrow's wrist ligament UNLESS,Ā  it was already strained. Which, would explain the wrist splint.

The NFL is investigating, a fine, maybe a pick as well if they "find" something.

Yeah, qbs dropping, but not from illegal hits, not from excessive hits either. It is just one of those years.

  4. A nice read for the slight layoff until the next game

OWINGS MILLS, Md. ā€“ The comparisons to the Baltimore Ravensā€™ 2000 defense, one of the greatest in league history, were premature. But the 2023 version of Baltimoreā€™s defense, through the first 10 games, is worthy of its own praise.

Having a second season in defensive coordinator Mike Macdonaldā€™s system has been an obvious ā€“ yet important ā€“ difference, players say.

Heā€™s got a somewhat complicated scheme," safety Kyle Hamilton told USA TODAY Sports. "But heā€™s done a great job drilling it down and making it simple for us."

Hamilton, himself more accustomed as a second-year player, was the poster player of the Ravensā€™ transition from longtime defensive coordinator Don "Wink" Martindale ā€“ now with the New York Giants ā€“ to Macdonald, who was a first-time NFL coordinator in 2022. In Week 2 of that season, it was Hamilton being beat deep by the Miami Dolphins that was the visual representation of their late-game collapse.

Fast forward to Week 10 of this season against the Cleveland Browns, and it was Hamilton who crept up to the line of scrimmage, blitzed and tipped a Deshaun Watson pass straight up into the air to come down with it and score on the second play of the game.

NFL STATS CENTRAL: The latest NFL scores, schedules, odds, stats and more.

Having defenders know how to do multiple things and play in different spots ā€“ especially for a 6-foot-4 safety like Hamilton ā€“ are all parts of Macdonaldā€™s philosophy.

I think it always keeps the offense on their toes, and I think allows us to make plays in different areas and show our versatility," Hamilton said.

Players have to keep up with the wrinkles Macdonald and his staff devise each week, edge rusher Odafe Oweh said.

"I also think guys are just getting more comfortable with the scheme and the defense," Oweh said. "Mike had all this stuff last year, too. Guys are just learning plays and being more skillful in certain positions.

In 2023, the Ravens enter a ā€œThursday Night Footballā€ matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals allowing the fewest yards per play (4.2) of any team. Despite giving up 27 points ā€“ the offense was responsible for a pick-six that was followed by a missed extra point ā€“ in a 33-31 loss to the Cleveland Browns on Sunday, Baltimore still has the top scoring defense in the NFL (15.7 points per game). The unit is third in sack rate (9.51%) with a league-best 39, and the 17.3 first downs the group allows per contest also ranks third.

Macdonald's defense found its groove in the second half of 2022. After a Week 9 trade with the Chicago Bears for inside linebacker Roquan Smith, the Ravens allowed 14.9 points per game, the second-best mark in the league. Baltimore finished third in rushing defense (92.1 yards per game).

During the offseason, Macdonald said the defensive coaches talked about ā€œhaving a clear vision of what we wanted to get to.ā€

So, it crystallized a little bit in how we were coaching it and our methods and how to do it," Macdonald said. "I think it was clear, and the staff has been awesome on how weā€™ve worked together on how we want to do it and how you go about executing it. So, the logistics of everything is just a lot smoother the second time around."

Of course, players need to buy into what the coaches are teaching. Thirteen players have registered sacks ā€“ an overrated metric in Macdonaldā€™s mind, because there are more accurate ways to calculate the effectiveness of a pass rush. Veterans Kyle Van Noy (16 quarterback pressures) and Jadeveon Clowney (five sacks) have contributed despite not being with the team for most of the offseason. Safety Geno Stone, not a starter at the outset of the season, leads the league in interceptions with six.

  5. Yeah, Likley is the obvious, but as papa said, Lamar rarely throws to him any more, and yes he has been wide open numerous times, since his big drop earlier in the season, "spoiling" a potential comeback.

They drafted Kolar high, too high, (remember Andrews was nof their first choice either), so maybe they can start using him more.

Im a little more concerned with Obj being injured, he drew anlot of coverage, created penalties, and appears to be, pre injury, back to his youthful self.

Can anyone tell me how to tackle a guy from behind while both are running in the same direction?Ā  Other than locking your arms and dropping your weight I see no other way to do it.Ā Ā

Yes, you tackle his mid section, both arms wrapped around him, then move, naturaly, your legs to the outside of the runner. It is pretty easy if taught and learned properly. Learned it my self in pee wee football..

#55 Logan Wilson took down Lamar dragging the leg and ankle. Dirty hit to my eye. Heā€™s the same dirty hitter on Andrews. The guy is garbage.Ā

I agree, the proper way to make that tackle is to slide your legs out, away from the defender. Clearly he cant make that tackle properly and should not be allowed to do so in the future

  8. Hopefully Obj is going to be fine. That shoulder injury can be tricky. The defender came from behind and drove him in to the ground.

But 9 days rest then back at it. That bye is going to be needed...

Maybe Andrews can visit with Brock Bowers, UGA tightend, similar injury, was only out for a few games... surely I jest...

  9. Just finished, almost, watching the game. So glad to see that they won.

It was a short week game, so nuts happen.

I agree, the worst, perhaps, officiated game I've seen in a while. The Ravens got lucky on that, without the bad officials the end of the half touchdown to Bateman does not happen.

Sadly, the holding call on OBj wad also bogus, taking a Flowers touchdown off the board.

This is where luck came in again, the tipped pass right to Algholar who caught and ran for 6.

Luck came calling again when a couple of Lamar over throws that should have been picked, were dropped.

I don't understand the first half play calling, all of those shots deep down field that were no where near completed, save one, that was tipped away. Maybe they wanted get him game practice in throwing them?

Second half, redzone, Lamar on a gimpy ankle they call qb runs? They pull Gus out?

Nice that they once again scored a touchdown on their opening drive, real nice. Nice that Obj got over 100, real nice.

Not nice, the defense, missed tackles.

Luck came calling again, Burrow hurt, not sure the Ravens win if Burrow plays the entire game.

Sucks about Andrews, done for the year.

Queen also hurt his anckle, as did Lamar.

Hey, weird things happen on short weeks, in short week games. So glad the Ravens won despite it being a short week

  10. Tee Higgins (hamstring), Sam Hubbard (ankle), and Andrei Iosivas (knee) have been ruled out after not practicing this week. That means the Bengals will rely heavily on Trenton Irwin and Tyler Boyd to step up next to Jaā€™Marr Chase at wide receiver.

Hendricks is playing, shucks, he always seems to kill us.

Stanley and Simpson are out, Humphries is doubtful for the good guys...

  11. Lamar 7-1 against the Bengals, over 70 yards rushing per game too boot. But it is a Night game, a short week game oy..mm

Good news, that tan ravens sideline hood is down to $69, wonder if I can get it for $49 by the time Christmas rolls around šŸ˜€šŸ¤”

  12. Well they did oldno, Watson is done for the year, needs shoulder surgery. A broken bone in his shoulder from the hit along the sidelines. Plus a high ankle sprain. Yet some how he managed to finish the game going 14 for 14 on passes and some big runs.. hmmm

  13. I disagree, I give no credence to how good any team is based on Thursday night games. It's heavy water, not clear water, they may as well be running through the jungle. (Yes, I have CCR playing in my head)

    Ā

  14. Well, while I do agree, Denver loses that game if not for the 4 turnovers. Josh seems to have the same problem Lamar does, turnovers in big games.

With the injuries to the line, and a short week, do expect a heavy dose of the run game, so long as it is close & or the Ravens have a big lead

Tsy,Ā  I find myself in the company of not trusting this team or coaches.Ā  Ā  Still, there's plenty of time to adjustĀ

and say, "fellas we are running it down their throats tonight.... all night". it would keep Burrow off the field, minimizesĀ

    Lamars obligatory picks or pick 6's.Ā  Ā If we get into a shoot-out w Burrow, we are going down.Ā  Ā  Ā Ā

Yep, take a page from their history, from Michigan when they played PSU last weekend, and run, run zone reads, run power, shoot, line up in the wishbone and run some more. When they get tired of that, run the wing T

  16. According to the Ravens main website, Humphries has a lower calf strain, better than I thought when I saw him grab the back of his ankle, he will be day to day..

No word that I saw on Stanley, Simpson nor the other walking wounded

  17. The best way to help guard against pass rushers when your replacement tackles struggle pass blocking? Run the football, it wears down the defensive line, ever carry, pushing, chasing, takes their legs out.

That was one reason a good running game + play action works so well.

But it is Thursday night, usually one team can't adjust to the short week, sometimes both.

Other times it is one side of the ball or the other. Should be interesting

  18. Eh, I hate the advanced stats, the made up, by Espn, one, expected this or that.

Look, this team has lost an astounding number of games when they had a double digit lead. Why? The offense bogs down, the defense let's up? Both?

The last Browns drive, false start, strip sack, normally the defense gets off of the field with a start like that, but they didn't. Why? Left the middle wide open for a big gain.

Over and over their tight end killed the Ravens defense with a 2 yard flat pass, breaking tackles for 8, 10 yard gains.

No answer from the Ravens defense, none.

With all of that said, while this team "should", could be undefeated, you can't win them all, the Phins of the 70's were an aberration.

The coaches, offensively and defensively, got carried away with plays. The players maybe let up a little bit after the way the game started, even after going up 31-17, when it was too late to turn it back on.

We can't blame injuries, the Browns came in with more, lost more players during the game.

Shoot, Watson was playing on a gimpy ankle.

They were just more physical as the game went on, Lamar decked, Oweh decked, VanNoy planted just to name a few. It happens.
