OT Rules Changed

The NFL has changed its overtime rules for playoff games. Starting next season, if a team wins the coin toss and then kicks a field goal, the other team gets the ball.

If the game is still tied after that, play will continue under the current sudden-death rules. Should the team winning the toss immediately score a touchdown, then the game is over.

Team owners voted 28-4 on Tuesday in favor of the proposal at the NFL meetings. The new rule applies only for postseason games.

It's not a bad rule change.

Still, I'm against it because this is just another Brady/Manning rule put into place. Oh no, Peyton didn't get to touch the ball in OT, whine whine whine!

It's a TEAM game. Offense, DEFENSE, and special teams. Tough shit.

Well two of the teams to vote against it was Baltimore and Cincinnati.

We probably wouldn't have made it to the AFC Championship in 2008 if this rule had been in place... but at the same time, we did play pretty lousy in that game (other than some KEY turnovers).

It's a fair rule, and it will be well-received in practice. Now, the question is... will it ever get instituted in the regular season?

It's still unfair.

If you win the coin toss then you don't want the ball. The plan is to hold them to a field goal or less...if they have a 4th and 8 from the 25 they will probably kick the FG.

Now you have the ball...and 4 downs to make 10 yards when the other team only had 3.

Okay, but if they score a touchdown, it could be over (and we've seen teams end games quick in OT with long passing plays that catch the D off-guard), so there are pros and cons of both.
