Disappointment or Bust?

I'll start.....Tavaris Gooden.

From what I've seen he gets hurt often, doesn't make the stops at the line of scrimage...he's no headhunter and LB's have to be that.

I don't think he can do the job inside if Ray goes down. Nobody's going to be Ray but somebody has to show they can play that position and play it nasty.

I don't see that in Gooden so I'll label him a bust.

D-Wil--Flat out dissapointment, He is a training camp stud, but when on the big stage folds like a chair. Its pretty sad that the play that sticks in my mind on him was the play in Denver in the endzone, what 4-5 years ago, when he let (Bailey) out leap him in the endzone for an INT, He had 5 inches on him.

I dont get how he has a roster spot.

I agree that Gooden hasn't shown he can do it inside.

He seems to be a slider rather than a stuffer, he tends to try and avoid the blocker rather than try to stuff him. Ellerbe seems to be better at stuffing and that method probably is best for our 3-4 defense. I think the Minnesota game last year really demonstrated this tendency (even though Gooden had 8 tackles, the tapes show his sliding tedencies and these often created holes in our defense b/c he was out of position when attempting to slide).

I think he might just be miscast as an inside backer. Before cutting him, maybe they should take a look at him as a SS. He has also shown some promise as an OLB in our 4-3 sets.

Who flies to the ball better?

Stats from the Ravens website...

Gooden:

2009 REGULAR SEASON - Saw action in 13 games (12 starts) and finished 7th on the team with 52 tackles and 2 PD as part of a squad that finished 2nd in the AFC and 3rd in the NFL in overall defense.

or...

Ellerbe:

2009 REGULAR SEASON - Saw action in 13 games (3 starts) after being the only rookie free agent to make the 53-man roster in 2009...Ellerbe finished 9th on the team with 55 tackles, 4 PD, 1 INT and a FR as part of a squad that finished 2nd in the AFC and 3rd in the NFL in overall defense...Also netted 8 special teams.

Looks like Ellerbe to me with 9 less starts.

In fairness to Gooden he was loosely labeled the "heir to Ray Lewis" probably because he was from Miami. That's too much of a burden to carry...like being the guy to replace Brooks Robinson or Johhny U.

The D was very good against the run with both of them playing this year...but Ray was next to them. If Ray's not there, can the D be as good?

I'm looking for the guy who can be Ray's replacement.

Mark Clayton's a disappointment IMO.

I give another....since he got his new contract... Suggs has been at least a disappointment. Another se43ason like last year and he's a bust for the money that he getys paid. I will say...Brady Quins premeditated cheap shot on Suggs knee affected his play for the rest of the year. It would be real sweet if Quin's the starter Week 5....Suggs might kill him.

Agreed we need more from Suggs.

Well at least Suggs seems to step up in the big games, like in both Pats games, and after a big play from Suggs the character of the game changed. The first game when we were basically out of the game, but Suggs (+ Dwan)play made it close, the attitude of the Ravens did change after that play.. OH dear Clayton.

In the PO, just after Rices insane TD, Suggs with maybe the games most important play, we needed Brady stopped early, and game over when the RBs and DBs did their job.
