Richardson having knee issues

BEREA, Ohio -- Browns running back Trent Richardson, the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, sat out practice today with a sore left knee and will undergo an MRI, a source told the Plain Dealer.

It's not believed to be serious, but coach Pat Shurmur said he could miss Friday's preseason opener in Detroit.

"He had a sore knee,'' said Shurmur. "That's why we held him out. We'll have to evaluate him further, which we'll do here after practice and we'll see where we go from there.''

Shurmur acknowledged, "There's a chance he won't play on Friday. I'm always concerned about injuries. I think at this point, we'll just find out what it is. He's been practicing well and he's just a little bit sore right now, so we'll just see where he is.''

Richardson had arthroscopic surgery on the knee Feb. 3 to repair a torn meniscus, and was medically excluded frome participating in drills at the NFL Combine.

He wore a rubber sleeve on the knee at Tuesday's practice and spent some of the session on an exercise bike. Richardson, who sat out Saturday's practice with headaches, also wore a sleeve on his left knee on and off during organized team activities in May and minicamp in June.
