Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, sidelined with a torn triceps, is expected to return Dec. 16 to face Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos, a team source told ESPN Friday.

Lewis, who is on the injured reserve/designated to return list, is eligible to return to the lineup that day. He was eligible to begin practicing Thursday, but did not.

Ravens coach John Harbaugh has classified Lewis' status as "day by day."

"He is not imminent to return to play (in a game) or anything like that, so to me it's really a nonstory," Harbaugh said Wednesday. "He'll go out there when he's ready to practice when the elbow holds up. And when that happens, we'll let you know."

Ray really wasn't playing all that great before the injury. His best contribution, ironically seemed to be in coverage. That's crazy, because that's where he struggled a year ago. To me he seemed to be in the right place at the right time alot in coverage, but he was not playing the run well at all.

What I ask you is Ray going to be able to do with half an arm? I just don't get where a 37 year old man with half an arm is going to contribute on a football field. Ray Lewis or not.

Believe me that hurts to say, I love the guys passion for the game. Unlike TO and Ocho the NFL will miss Ray. The NFL will always keep chugging, but it will miss a guy like Ray.

I have thought about this a lot recently. Ray is truly special. His passion, his determintation, his work ethic.

That said, I'm glad he's healthy, but he is 37 years old. Ellerbe is out playing him and needs to continue getting the most playing time. At this point in the career, Ray cannot be on the field every snap without hurting the team.

They need Ray....even if it's just for depth.

Ellerbe is dinged up...they had to start Ayambadejo. One more key injury to the LB corps will be one too many.

Yes I agree about needing Ray for depth. Ellerbe is a playmaker but injury prone. I just don't think he should start over a healthy Ellerbe. BTW Ayanbadejo usually looks solid when he's in there, especially in coverage. Why doesn't he play more?

He played great last week but he's been inconsistent in the past. Gets pushed around and for some reason misses tackles. I don't think he'll be like that this year. He's a pridefull guy and really wants to help the D and not be a weak link. We saw that Sunday.

This was why I was arguing to transition Ray to outside LBer during camp. I'm sure Ray could set the edge and cover a smaller portion of field. No one was listening. Not sure why cuz Seau set the precedent and was very successful. Miss you Junior.

I heard someone on 1057 suggest this. I just don't know if he has the speed to get to the QB and we know he can't cover.
