Baltimore Ravens linebacker Jameel McClain received some more positive news as he continues his recovery from a spinal cord contusion that ended his season.

According to Robert Klemko of the USA Today, McClain says doctors told him the injury is “resolving itself” and is unlikely to require surgery.

McClain was injured in the third quarter of a December loss to the Washington Redskins. McClain attempted a tackle on Redskins’ running back Alfred Morris and took a blow to the neck area that made his body go numb.

“I guess I just had my head in a wrong position and then, boom! My body went numb for a little bit. I could feel my hands. I could feel my legs. And then the sensation went away,” McClain said.

The prognosis for McClain’s recovery has always been fairly favorable but not having to undergo surgery is another positive step in the process. McClain will likely be called upon to fill a bigger role for the Ravens with the retirement of Ray Lewis and Dannell Ellerbe leaving in free agency. McClain started 13 games for the Ravens last season before the injury and recorded 79 tackles with three passes defensed.

That is good news. Fans forget that he started and Ellerbe was the back up.
