Ravens training camp: Four undrafted free agents to watch

The Ravens have had consistent success through the years unearthing undrafted free agent gems — from Priest Holmes to Bart Scott to Mike Flynn to, more recently, Jameel McClain, Dannell Ellerbe, Justin Tucker and Deonte Thompson.

Marques Douglas, Will Demps, Randy Hymes and Albert McClellan are some of Baltimore’s other undrafted free agent success stories. With the first full-team practice of training just a couple days away, here are four members of this year’s undrafted free agent class who most appear to have a chance to emerge and challenge for roster spots during the next several weeks (listed alphabetically):

CB Moe Lee

Lee was just a part-time starter in college for Utah, and his workout numbers were just average (4.59 40-yard dash), but he more than held his own during rookie minicamp, offseason team activities (OTAs) and mandatory minicamp and was singled out for his play last month by Ravens secondary coach Teryl Austin.

Austin called Lee a player that has “really kind of caught my eye.”

“He just kind of seems to be around the ball quite a bit,” Austin said of Lee. “Now, when that gets into games and real life situations, we will see how that plays out.”

Four cornerbacks — Lardarius Webb, Jimmy Smith, Corey Graham and Chykie Brown — appear to be locks to make the roster, meaning Lee will be in competition with 2012 fifth-round pick Asa Jackson, veteran Chris Johnson and seventh-round pick Marc Anthony for one of what’s likely to be two remaining roster spots at cornerback.

DL Will Pericak

Pericak was a four-year starter at Colorado, an honorable mention All-Big 12 pick each of his final three college seasons and reportedly received the biggest signing bonus ($13,500) among Baltimore’s undrafted free agents.

He is considered a long shot to make the Ravens’ roster based on Baltimore’s depth along the defensive line. But regardless of the odds, Pericak appears to be a player that has impressed through this point of the offseason.

Ravens Pro Bowl defensive Haloti Ngata said last month that Pericak and fellow undrafted free agent defensive lineman Cody Larsen had both done well to that point and that it’s “going to be exciting to see them in camp.”

Pericak had 62 tackles, six tackles for a loss, two sacks and four forced fumbles as a senior at Colorado last season.

Safety Brynden Trawick

Trawick has good size at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds. He’s a decent athlete, having run a 4.61 in the 40-yard dash and recorded a 36.5 inch vertical jump. He was productive at Troy. And he stood out at times during the early part of the offseason with the Ravens.

Trawick led the Sun Belt with 123 tackles as a junior at Troy in 2011 and had 83 tackles and three interceptions as a senior last year.

Three safeties — Michael Huff, Matt Elam and James Ihedigbo — are considered locks to make the Ravens’ roster, but Trawick will compete with Christian Thompson, Omar Brown, Anthony Levine and fellow undrafted free agent Gary Walker for a roster spot.

OLB Meshak Williams

Baltimore may not keep any outside linebackers in addition to Terrell Suggs, Elvis Dumervil, Courtney Upshaw and John Simon, but Williams is an intriguing pass rush prospect who had 10.5 sacks as a senior at Kansas State last season.

It will be real hard to see if they are worth keeping because we can't go to camp. These are the types of players that I loved to follow. These types of players push the rest to excel.

I'd like to see some competition at the TE spot. Someone to push Dickson. Behind Dickson we have Bajema, the TE from MD, and the basketball player right?

I think the Basketball player gave up after a few practices. I was surprised the TE didn't make the list. Furstenburg was playing well according to some early reports.

I don't know how a player gets an honorable mention for the Big 12 when Colorado have been playing in the PAC-12 the last couple of seasons.

I think the kid will be fine. I can see him shifting from FB to TE or the other way around. They can move him all over.

And folks called for Birks head since he got here, lets not forget Joe was one of the most sacked QB's in the league, and we didnt straighten it out til Caldwell took over.
