I'm glad you like it but I'm waiting to see it...

2) The defense is back in Baltimore

The Baltimore Ravens have some questions on offense -- the Dennis Pitta injury looms large -- but this defense will return to dominance.

Terrell Suggs is healthy and primed to contend for another Defensive Player of the Year award. Dumervil looks great -- the perfect pass-rushing complement to Suggs. And veteran addition Daryl Smith looks capable at the all-important Mike linebacker spot. Not to mention, two highly regarded draft picks (safety Matt Elam and linebacker Arthur Brown) might be starting the year as backups -- a testament to Baltimore's defensive depth.

I'll say it again: The Ravens will win the AFC North. No Ray Lewis? No Ed Reed? No problem. Baltimore will field a better defense in 2013 than it did last season -- a season that ended in Super Bowl triumph.

Now...I'd be shocked if this unit isn't very good. They could be great if they solve their communication and assignment issues.

Memo to Jimmy from Preston...

If you listen carefully, Ravens defensive coordinator Dean Pees usually leaves you a nugget of truth because he can't help himself. On Monday, Pees was asked several questions about cornerback Jimmy Smith, pictured at right, who didn't play well last Thursday night against the Falcons.

Smith hinted that everything wasn't his fault. Pees did say that Smith has done well in camp, but admitted that he didn't play well against the Falcons.

"There certainly has been some times when the guys get blamed for something on a coverage that may not be theirs," Pees said. "But for the most part, if the ball is deep and there are two guys there, it's him. I don't know what else to say. That's his dude."

Are you listening, Jimmy?

Theres no way we wont see an improvement in the D..Now if we didnt win the Super Bowl the D would be greatly scrutinized this off season, but winning cures all, thats why it really hasnt been front and center of attention, Joes contract has. This D will be top 5 once again this season.

  • As far as jimmy Smith goes, it wasnt like he got burned by an unknown, Julios Jones is an up and comer great in this league, Jimmy needs to learn to shut those types down.It wasnt just 1 play, Jimmy got beat for 3 passes for 55 yards from Jones.

Jimmy suffers from not playing the ball. On a number of the receptions he gives up he has great coverage but fails to look back for the ball when the receiver does. On another reception for a TD he gave up I think he was expecting safety help inside (from the alingment of the safety it sure looked that way as well) but when Jones cut inside the safety had disappeared which allowed an easy reception in the middle of the endzone.

The stats make it look worse than it actually is. When the secondary gets on the same page they should be good. And if Jimmy can learn from Webby how to locate the ball in the air he will be just fine.

Like most everyone on this board, I am stoked about the possibilities but before anyone anoints this D as dominant, lets see how this talent translates to regular season play.

I am still unsure what to make of the MLB (less concerned) and both safety positions (more). We lost a boatload of experience and locker room leadership.

Time will tell and we'll begin to learn something in about 2 weeks.

Go Ravens :gorave:

Absolutely right on Jimmy Smith's problem of not locating the ball. He's always close enough to the receiver to make a play but has real difficulty looking for the ball at the right time.
