Opinion: The Ravens have a Joe Flacco problem

The Ravens’ offense has struggled mightily through the first nine games of the season. At first, many were pointing the finger at Baltimore’s offensive coordinator, Marty Mornhinweg. Sound familiar?

It is worth noting, Mornhinweg, as an offensive coordinator, has had a lot of success in this league. Mornhinweg was the offensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eaglesfrom 2006 to 2012. The lowest total ranking for his offense was in 2012, as they were ranked 15th.

In 2013 and 2014, Marty Mornhinweg was the offensive coordinator of the New York Jets. His offenses, with Geno Smith and Michael Vick, had more success than Baltimore’s 2017 offense.

Looking at Joe Flacco’s numbers through nine games, Flacco has 1,551 passing yards, eight touchdowns and 10 interceptions. His completion percentage, 64.3, is 12th best in the league, among eligible players. However, his yards per attempt is worst in the league, 5.33.

As for his 1,551 passing yards, that puts Flacco at the 26th in the league. His 10 interceptions have him tied for third most in the league, while his eight touchdowns have him, again, at 26th best.

To say those numbers are bad would be an understatement. This has not been Flacco’s greatest season, by any stretch.

Although, as much as the play-calling seems to be an issue, it can’t be the main culprit. The scheme and game-planning could vastly improve, however, several instances Flacco elects to dump the ball off to a running back or a tight end two or three yards down the field as opposed to taking a shot deep down the field. Simply put, that is not on the play-calling or the scheme, but rather on Flacco.

To say Flacco has no help is not the most accurate statement either. Not only does he have a top-ten rusher in Alex Collins, but he also has an efficient offensive line, as of late.

According to PFF, since week five, Baltimore is eighth best in pass-blocking efficiency. Also, according to PFF, in week nine, Baltimore only allowed seven pressures on 54 drop backs.

His receiving core has not helped much either, mainly Breshad Perriman. That is a fair argument. However, Flacco makes even the simplest of throws look hard. How often do you see his intended targets have to really adjust to make the catch? Remember the play below? I still blame Perriman for the incompletion, but it is worth mentioning, Flacco didn’t make it easy for his struggling receiver.

Also, Benjamin Watson and Jeremy Maclin have, quietly, had relatively productive seasons, despite the poor offensive display.

Moving on to the upcoming schedule, either way you slice it, the Ravens have a ‘cupcake’ schedule. The Ravens have seven games left, below is a chart of those seven defensive units and where they are ranked.

Defense Rankings Team Total Defense Pass Defense Run Defense Green Bay Packers 25th 20th 23rd Houston Texans 20th 21st 9th Detroit Lions 21st 27th 6th Pittsburgh Steelers 5th 2nd 14th Cleveland Browns 9th 17th 4th Indianapolis Colts 31st 31st 17th Cincinnati Bengals 6th 5th 20th ESPN

The excuses are running out for Baltimore’s franchise quarterback. These seven games could have a big impact on Flacco’s future with Baltimore.

PFF again? We already showed they were a crock with their ratings!?

Sorry any article that uses them as a reference is bogus.

Everything is to blame, Joe, Marty, the receivers, the line....

I totally agree not is an all in problem. I have said Joe is a major problem and the article does make points I didn't think of and also some I have made. I said Joe was not accurate and WRs had to make major adjustments for a long time. I totally agree with this statement. I saw it in the SB run: "How often do you see his intended targets have to really adjust to make the catch?"

Yep. The whole organization needs an overhaul.

Can't do much about Joe until 2019 except go and get his replacement this coming draft. Lots of good qb's supposed to be available.

Bisciotti will really have his mettle and reputation tested with how he handles the front office changes. And whether he will even do anything.

Have you watched the high lights from other games or even the other games; top 10 catches. Shoot, other receivers of Rogers, Brady, Brees etc all make circus catches. When was the last time you saw a receiver for the Ravens make one of them?

I tell you what, if Biscutt doesn't make changes in the front office and coaching staff this off season baring a super bowl run, deep into the playoffs, I will be done with this team until he does. Not that it will affect him at all, I already do not spend money on this team; not clothing, not tickets, nadda...

They better grab one early. I see 13 teams needing to get a QB. Don't wait and be left without a chair. So stop winning meaningless games.

Sure good QBs throw balls that receivers need to adjust to. But Joe always does it. He rarely is accurate with his throws.

I'm not sure if he regressed but I don't think he ever progressed or learned the way most QBs do. Ten years in he still makes a lot of the same mistakes he did as a rookie.

I don't want to beat a guy when he's down, but Joe gives me the feeling he thinks he's good enough and doesn't see a need or have the will to put in the hard work to improve.

The worst of it is that I think he has great talent and potential but lacks the appropriate work ethic.

So, unless he has an epiphany, I think we're stuck with a below-average to mediocre quarterback.
Time for the organization and fans to take the long view because short term things aren't going to get much better. They need to find a QB to groom for the future in the next draft. The next draft should focus totally on the offense: QB, O-line, WR, and Tight End.
