Scott Kacsmar and the folks over Football Outsiders took a look at exactly what the Ravens have relied on in recent years. They’re called failed completions. Football Outsiders defines the stat as “any completed pass that fails to gain 45 percent of needed yards on first down, 60 percent on second down, or 100 percent on third or fourth down.”

Of the 35 qualified quarterbacks on the list, Joe Flacco had the second highest failed completion percentage last season (36.1%). He finished only in front of rookie Mitchell Trubisky. The bottom five quarterbacks consisted of Brett Hundley, Brian Hoyer, Deshone Kizer, Trubisky and Flacco himself. Two were rookies, two were backups and one was a 10-year veteran. Can you guess who the outlier is?

Either the offense and the coordinator or the QB needs changed. Both suck and we are keeping both therefore we suck.

It's unfathomable. Other teams use checkdowns too but gain good yardage with them. i think the problem is more with us not having any quickness in our checkdown receivers. One other thing pisses me off is how many times do we have to see a receiver catch the ball in front of the first down marker????

It is unfathomable. This has been going on for years and should have been easily corrected years ago.

 

On the positive side: it does look like they got rid of the 3rd down outlet pass to the back in the flat, where Joe looks at the back, waits, looks a little longer at the back, waits until the defense gets a full running start towards him and then throws it a little behind him and finally, Joe watches as his teammate gets wiped out while struggling to catch the ball.

Bingo, I wonder if these "stats" & "rankings" take into account the lack of quickness the backs and receivers lack on this team.

 

It was only a few years ago when the check downs worked perfectly for this team with Juice or Rice being the target.

 

Check downs kill the Ravens defense most of the time because of quickness and the over pursuit of this defense.

 

It is not all on Joe, but we shouldn't let facts get in the way.

But the Rice 4th and 30 play was ridiculously lucky. So the team has decided to turn the lucky into the game plan.

Ive never seen a metric on quickness, unfortunately. I guess the closest thing to it is yards after catch up thar includes mid_and longer distance completions.

 

Tom Brady has made a career out of throws to quick receivers and backs. Think Amendola and Edelman. Belichick always finds a way to have receivers like them on his team. He has a scheme that takes advantage of that quality.

And the QB has a lot to do with that. Not hitting a guy in stride makes it easy to put him down fast.
