papasmurfbell
What movies have you actually watched form this yrs Oscars? My list. InceptionThe Kids Are All Right - This film was great. Well written and acted. Something original on film.127 Hours - Danny Boyle is an insanely great director. The Social NetworkToy Story 3Winter's Bone - I think this is the best film of the yr that I have seen. The TownAnimal Kingdom - Really entertaining. Restrepo - The best documentary since Hoop Dreams.I Am Love - Done well. Not spectacular but solid. The WolfmanIron Man 2Salt I only commented on the independent films. Most probably have not heard of them.
Spen
The ones I saw on your list: Inception - a lot of fun, and relatively well written and smartThe Kids Are All Right - I liked it. I thought it got a little off track the second half but it was still good. Winter's Bone - Might be the best I saw too. Great performances from Jennifer Lawrence and John Hawkes (very underrated actor). The Town - decent but too long. Didnt like the ending they virtually stole from another movie after the original ending tested bad. Iron Man 2 - ok I want to see all the best picture nominees. Most look good to me. With the exception of what will probably win - The Kings Speech. Oh I'm sure its well done and acted, but it looks like a typical safe Oscar pick. A movie based on a real person with either a physical or psychological obstacle to overcome often equals Oscar gold. Unless of course they go full retard like Sean Penn in "I Am Sam" and Tugg Speedman in "Simple Jack". I just read the book "True Grit" and want to see the new version of the movie. The book was very good, very darkly funny.

I was really happy with that movie until the affair. I think that slowed it down for me.
dc.
King's Speech was great. And perhaps "safe," but I don't think it fits the "if you have a disability" mold perfectly. I think more intrinsic to the story were the personal relationships, the impending war and just the class relationship between king and subject. I'm sure its good, and I am sure I will see it on DVD some day. It just doesn't interest me as much as the others. I was, or meant to, make fun of the Oscars more than the movie itself. Hey, how long was Guy Pearce in the movie? The Mrs has a crush on him and was excited to see The Hurt Locker. lol, if you know how long he was in that. And The Road too. So with him in it I know I will be seeing it sooner rather than later.
deeshopper
The Town. I enjoyed it.
dc.
I loved The Town. I was very skeptical of Affleck directing and starring... starring especially. I put it on hold for a long while. Then I was sad I did. As for Guy Pearce, he is in Kings Speech a decent bit. Several scenes with extended interaction. Hardly the focus of the film, though. And I know what you were saying about the Oscars - just wanted to clarify that I don't think it fits that mold as much as some may say. I loved Inception too (back to OP). Just brilliant mindgames. And while Nolan's dialogue might not be the best in the world, his stories are fantastic and have more depth and detail than so much else. The level of originality to build a movie about building dreams - and all the overlay that went into it - just wonderful.
dc.
PS - also saw Buried this past weekend. Better than I expected. And for being 90 minutes of just Ryan Reynolds in a box... literally, you never leave the box... it held my attention. Some of it was just way too unbelievable, though - but I think it was an intentional play by the director - I could just never tell.
papasmurfbell
The Town I think will make Jeremy Renner a huge star. I found him last yr in The Hurt Locker (Best film I have seen in yrs). The Town will make him known on a wide stage.
dc.
I thought Renner was great in Hurt Locker... but I didn't care for the film very much. Unfortunately, I don't think The Town has gotten much publicity - so he still won't be exceptionally known. Though, I recognized him in both films from some of his earlier work and smaller parts. I remember him most vividly in SWAT. If he wins the Oscar for The Town... he'll be known, I guess. But I wouldn't bet on him over Geoffrey Rush. And Rush deserves it. papasmurfbell
No he will not win. The Town showed that he is bankable. It made a good amount.
Spen
Hes going to be Hawkeye in the Avengers movie, that should get him some wide exposure.
papasmurfbell
Yep that will really take him off.
deeshopper
I didn't really like Hurt Locker myself. I remember Renner from his earlier work, specifically his guest spot on Angel.
dc.
It's not worth arguing, but The Town didn't make much money for a mainstream film - under $100m I'm pretty sure. I would hope the Avengers film does better... but sometimes you just don't know. Could ruin him too, haha. And yeah, Dee, while I found the concept of The Hurt Locker to be pretty interesting and the filmmaking interesting... somehow there was a disconnect. I didn't see much story or depth... it was just a few hours of really tense bomb diffusing. ' Personally, I am most excited for ... Winnie the Pooh (2011). Original animation style. New story, but with classic characters (no more elephant kid thing). And a brilliant trailer set to Keane's Somewhere Only We Know, with an opening tag line ... "Sometimes we all feel... a little hungry." Too good.

JPPT1974
Need to see all of those. But Inception. You had to sit through without going to the bathroom. My dad didn't like it however. He was looking at his watch waiting for it to end LOL!

dc.
My parents said the same thing about Inception. They say it about a lot of movies I like. Not surprising. They got it... but it just didn't do much for them. So it goes.

OutsideRzAcE
I've seen Salt, The Fighter, and Iron Man 2. I enjoyed all three. Bale's performance in The Fighter was awesome, so I was glad he won. I didn't get a chance to see Inception yet but it's on the netflix list along with Toy Story 3. We might get to The Town and The Social network eventually. I doubt I will ever see Black Swan and the Kings Speech.
